🦠 Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that can cause serious respiratory illness, especially in young children.

❄️ It spreads like a cold, through contact with infected saliva or mucus, and usually peaks from late fall 🍁 through early spring 🌼.

πŸ‘‡ Who is at risk?πŸ‘‡

πŸ‘Ά Infants.

πŸ§’ High-risk children under 2 years old.

❓How can you protect your child❓

🀰 If you're pregnant, receiving the RSV vaccine between 32–36 weeks can help protect your baby from RSV after birth. This means your baby may not need an additional immunization after they're born!

πŸ’‰ For infants under 6 months who didn’t receive this protection in pregnancy, an immunization called nirsevimab (Beyfortus) can help protect them.

πŸŽ‰ This immunization has been shown to reduce RSV-related hospitalizations and healthcare visits by 80% in infants.

πŸ‘‡ When to get it?πŸ‘‡

🩺 The immunization can be given with or between your baby’s routine shots. Talk to your healthcare provider about whether your child needs RSV protection.

πŸ₯ RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization in infants under 1 year old. Keep your baby safe this winterβ€”ask us about RSV immunization today!

β˜€οΈ Sun Safety Tips for Summer β˜€οΈ
Did you know one bad sunburn in childhood can double the risk of skin cancer later in life? Kids spend a lot of time outside in summerβ€”let’s help protect their skin while they play!

Tip #1: Start with Shade & Clothing
βœ… Lightweight long sleeves and pants
βœ… Wide-brimmed hats (3” brim is best)
βœ… Sunglasses with 99%+ UV protection
βœ… Clothing with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor)

Tip #2: Choose the Right Sunscreen
βœ… Broad-spectrum (UVA + UVB)
βœ… SPF 30 or higher
βœ… Mineral-based: zinc oxide or titanium dioxide
βœ… Fragrance-free and hypoallergenic for sensitive skin
🚫 Avoid spray sunscreens for babies and kids. The propellant chemicals should not be inhaled by children – stick with lotion, cream, or stick sunscreens instead!

Tip #3: Apply Sunscreen Correctly
βœ… Put sunscreen on 15–30 minutes before sun exposure
βœ… Use enough to fully cover skin
βœ… Reapply every 2 hours or after swimming/sweating
βœ… Even on cloudy daysβ€”UV rays still get through!

Tip #4: Shade & Time of Day Matter
βœ… UV rays are strongest between 10am–4pm
βœ… Check your weather app for the UV index
βœ… Plan outdoor activities early in the morning or late afternoon
βœ… Stay in the shade when possible

Tip #5: Start Sun-Safe Habits Now!
βœ… Teach kids to protect their skin
βœ… Set a good example by practicing sun safety yourself
βœ… Choose the right sunscreen
βœ… Cover up, seek shade, and reapply often!

πŸ’‘ Fun in the sun is even better when it’s safe. Teaching kids sun-safe habits now sets them up for a healthy future!

πŸŽ† Fireworks Safety Tips for Families πŸŽ†
Thousands of children, teens, and young adults are injured by fireworks every year β€” and most injuries happen in the month around the 4th of July. Here are some simple steps to help keep your family safe this holiday:

Tip #1: Leave Fireworks to the Pros
βœ… Watch professional shows instead of backyard fireworks
βœ… Stay at least 500 feet away from launch sites
βœ… Protect your child’s hearing β€” fireworks can be louder than 150 decibels (above 75–80 dB can cause hearing damage)

Tip #2: Sparklers Aren’t So Safe
⚠️ Sparklers cause nearly half of fireworks injuries in kids under 5
πŸ”₯ They burn at 2,000Β°F β€” hot enough to melt metal!
πŸ‘• Sparks can ignite clothes & cause serious burns or eye injuries

Tip #3: Safer Ways to Celebrate
✨ Wave glow sticks, streamers, or flags instead of sparklers
🌌 Look for laser or drone shows if fireworks are cancelled in your area
βœ… Always follow local fire safety rules β€” fireworks can spark wildfires

Tip #4: What if You Find a Firework?
🚫 Never touch unexploded or β€œdud” fireworks
πŸ“ž Keep your distance & call your local fire or police department
πŸ’₯ Duds can still go off unexpectedly and cause serious injuries

πŸ’‘ Professional shows are bigger, safer, and help protect kids from injuries and hearing damage β€” a win for everyone!
