Fun was definitely had this weekend at Illinois State University!

The second annual St. Jude Games brought together teams from across campus for a throwback-style competition, complete with classic elementary school field day events. From hula hoop battles and egg-on-a-spoon races to an unforgettable tug-of-war showdown, this group embraced every moment.

Even better? They raised more than $10,000 for St. Jude!

A huge thank you to Illinois State University for St. Jude for organizing such a fantastic day and for helping share the mission of St. Jude with the next generation of supporters. We’re so grateful for your energy, creativity, and commitment!

St. Jude announced today that James R. Downing, MD, will step down as president and CEO this year as part of a planned leadership transition. After more than a decade leading the institution through significant growth, he will continue to advance the mission in a faculty role within Global Pediatric Medicine.

The St. Jude Board of Governors has initiated a global search for the next CEO, with an announcement expected this summer and a full transition by the end of 2026. This process will ensure continuity for the institution’s scientific, clinical and global programs.

During his tenure, Downing guided major expansions in research, clinical care and global outreach. These efforts strengthened the institution’s ability to address childhood cancer and other catastrophic pediatric diseases. “I’ve watched St. Jude transform the care of pediatric cancer around the world, and I’m grateful to have played a small part as its CEO,” he said.

Board Chair Judy Habib highlighted his impact on collaboration across the global pediatric cancer community, saying, “He has nurtured the spirit of collaboration within St. Jude and among peer institutions, governments, global agencies and advocacy groups.”

Ike Anand, president and CEO of ALSAC, emphasized the partnership between the two organizations, stating that he has long admired Downing’s “commitment to scientific excellence and his deep compassion for the children and families we serve.”
