What is Capgras Syndrome?
“That’s not my husband… it just looks like him.”

This heartbreaking belief is a symptom of Capgras Syndrome, a rare condition where someone with dementia becomes convinced that someone close to them—often a spouse or caregiver—has been replaced by an identical-looking impostor.
It’s not stubbornness or spite. It’s the brain misfiring connections between recognition and emotion. The face is familiar, but the emotional connection is gone—so their brain fills in the gap with a false but convincing belief.
If this happens:
• Don’t argue. Stay calm.
• Use soothing tone and gentle reassurance.
• Sometimes a change of scenery or stepping out of the room and returning helps reset the moment.
Capgras is one of the many ways dementia can show up—unexpected, confusing, and deeply emotional. You’re not alone in navigating it.

Understanding Incontinence in Dementia
Incontinence is common in people living with dementia and can be one of the most challenging symptoms for caregivers. It’s not just a physical issue—it’s tied to memory, confusion, and changes in how the brain processes signals.

As dementia progresses, your loved one may:
Forget where the bathroom is
Not recognize the urge to go
Struggle to remove clothing in time
Have mobility issues that make it hard to get there
It’s important to approach this with patience and dignity. Bladder and bowel accidents are not intentional. With the right support, routine, and medical guidance, many caregivers find ways to manage this with less stress.

Mountain View Hospice is here to help. Our team supports families with real solutions that preserve comfort and dignity.

Why Showering Can Be So Hard for Someone With Dementia

For someone living with dementia, taking a shower can feel scary or overwhelming. The confusion of not recognizing the bathroom, the sound of running water, or not understanding why they need to undress can all be triggers. The task is no longer just routine—it’s unfamiliar and unsettling.
At Mountain View Hospice, we understand these struggles and offer guidance to help families navigate them.

Anticipatory grief is real.

It’s that quiet ache that begins long before your loved one is gone. You see them here, you hold their hand, you care for them every day — but the life you were supposed to share feels like it’s slipping away. You grieve the memories that will never happen, and you grieve the changes you see right in front of you.

For caregivers and loved ones, this kind of grief can feel confusing and heavy. Guilt shows up — “How can I feel this way when they’re still here?” But it’s not wrong to feel this. It’s love. It’s the heart’s way of preparing for what’s ahead.

At Mountain View Hospice, we walk alongside families through this. You’re not alone in the heartache, the love, and the complicated mix of emotions that come with this journey.

If you need support, we’re here to listen.

Morphine in Hospice: It's Not About Giving Up—It's About Giving Comfort"

One of the biggest myths we hear is: "Morphine will speed up my loved one's death."
Here’s the truth: Morphine does not cause death when used correctly. In fact, it’s one of the most effective ways to ease pain and shortness of breath at end of life.

Morphine allows people to breathe easier, rest more comfortably, and live their final days with dignity and less distress. At Mountain View Hospice, our skilled nurses carefully dose and monitor all medications to ensure safety and comfort.

We don’t give up—we give relief.

Our Journey...

The Three Amigas... Amiee, Jaime and Laura started on this journey in 2018 after working in the field and seeing what an amazing benefit hospice has. Hospice does not just pertain to the patient but also the family, friends, caregivers and all who know the patient. We are three nurses with great clinical backgrounds. Jaime and Laura both did critical care situations for a number of years and has seen it all!

The three of us have such different unique qualities that fit together just like a puzzle. It was hard to pass up the opportunity as it unfolded right in front of us. Amiee is the perfect paperwork gal. We love to tease her about how perfect everything is that she touches. When there is something to be organized or attended to it is Amiee to the rescue. Jaime is the natural friend. She is the one who can go into a room of strangers and come out with lots of new friends. Laura is the clinical guru. Knowing and understanding all of the Medicare guidelines and regulations is her niche and boy is she good at it.
