Good vision is key to a child’s physical development, success in school, and overall well-being.

Children's eyes change rapidly making it important to be vigilant about eye health. Make regular vision screenings a priority to detect and correct eye problems at an early age.

‘Tis the season for leaf burning and bonfires but how do you cope with the eye burning effects of the smoke? Here’s a few tips that might help ...

▪ Use over-the-counter preservative free artificial tears. Patients with underlying conditions already using artificial tears may want to double their application.

▪ Cool your eyes. Keeping artificial tears in the refrigerator is a great way to have something cool ready to rinse your eyes. Lying down with a cold compress over your eyes is also soothing.

▪ Stay indoors. Particularly if you have an underlying condition that makes you more sensitive to the smoke, such as dry eye, it’s best to close the windows and stay indoors as much as possible.

▪ Wear glasses or goggles. Specialty goggles that are often prescribed to patients with dry eye can be a great option for anyone experiencing sensitivity to smoke in the air. And close-fitting glasses or sunglasses will provide at least some barrier that slows the stream going into your eyes.

▪ Improve your indoor air with an air filter. A HEPA air purifier can help keep wildfire smoke out of your home.

If the irritation or discomfort persists contact us to rule out other underlying ocular problems.

You can check if the lenses of non-prescription sunglasses are made properly by following these steps:

▪ Look at something with a rectangular pattern, like a tiled floor.
▪ Hold the glasses at a comfortable distance from your face and cover one eye.
▪ Move the glasses slowly from side to side, then up and down, looking through the lenses.
▪ If the rectangular lines stay straight, the lenses are fine. If the lines are wavy or wiggle (especially in the center of the lens), try another pair.

The kids are officially back-to-school, Labor Day is in the rearview mirror, and you’re pulling out the jeans and sweatshirts! Wow - where did summer go?

Just because the days are getting shorter and summer is coming to an end doesn’t mean you should stop wearing your sunglasses. In fact, it’s just as important to wear your sunglasses at the apple orchard as it is at the swimming pool!

So keep those shades handy and if you need a new pair to spruce up your fall wardrobe, our Optical Department has a great selection to choose from! 😎🍎🍂

As we age, we are more likely to develop systemic health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes. It’s important to remember that these diseases can seriously damage your eyes as well. One warning sign of both high blood pressure and diabetes is frequent changes in vision - such as blurriness.

Be honest with your ophthalmologist about your health conditions and what medications and nutritional supplements you take. Also, disclose about your eating, sleeping, exercise and other lifestyle choices. Remember: you and your ophthalmologist are partners in caring for your vision.

Keeping up with regular eye exams allows your ophthalmologist to catch problems early. The sooner a problem is detected, the more likely treatment will be successful. The Academy of Ophthalmology recommends for adults age 65 and older to have a complete eye exam every year or every other year. Talk with your ophthalmologist about his/her recommendations specific to your current situation and health history.
