For students exploring health care careers, OSF HealthCare offers early pathways that help build skills, gain experience and grow into high-demand clinical roles – with minimal education costs.

One of these opportunities is the surgical tech pathway, ideal for high school students or recent grads interested in hands-on, team-based patient care. Surgical techs are essential members of the surgical team, preparing the operating room, maintaining a sterile field and assisting during procedures.

Students can begin in part-time or entry-level roles and progress into an accredited surgical tech program with support from OSF HealthCare’s education benefits.

In November, Rick Edwards’ life changed in an instant after an 8-foot fall from a ladder sent him to OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center with serious injuries.

Rick doesn’t remember the fall. What he does remember is waking up in the Emergency Department and later hearing reassuring words in the ICU: “I got you, Rick.”

From there, his journey continued on the trauma floor, where he spent six days recovering from broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a broken wrist, spinal injuries and a head hematoma. Along the way, Rick says he experienced second-to-none professionalism and compassion from every member of the care team.

To the RNs, PCTs, X-ray techs and environmental services team members, Rick shared one message over and over: thank you for saving my life.

We are grateful Rick took the time to return and share his story with our Surgical Acute team and remind us why this work matters.
