Although 125 years have passed since FamilyCore’s first annual report, many of the advertisements within its pages reflect needs that remain relevant today—laundry services, real estate, clothing, undertakers, and printing. Among the advertisers was Edward Hine and Company, a printing business founded in 1880 that remarkably operated until 2011!

Associated Charities now () shared its annual report in 1911, outlining caseloads, expenses, and client services—and reaffirmed its mission:

“If they are hungry, we will provide food—but our services will not end there… They may need medical care, or a job, or a hundred other things besides food.”

FamilyCore’s first Annual Report, published in 1900, included a Constitution that established the society’s operating standards—back when it was known as Associated Charities and Philanthropies. The report detailed all donations received, organizing them by contribution level. Adjusted for inflation, with $1 in 1900 equaling about $38 today, members were giving the equivalent of $76 to $7,700 annually—an extraordinary show of generosity for the time.

Looking back 125 years in FamilyCore’s first annual report, we find the story of a young family in need—seeking help from the agency for something as simple, yet essential, as shoes so their children could attend school. The agency provided the shoes, helped the father find a job, and he paid the cost back in small installments.

Fast forward to today, and it’s clear: what may seem like “small stuff” still has a lasting impact. Whether it's a backpack filled with school supplies, a box of groceries to get through the week, or a holiday gift that brings joy to a child—these moments matter. FamilyCore continues its mission in big and small ways, just as it did more than a century ago.

In 2010, a capital campaign allowed FamilyCore to purchase the downtown building where our offices are located today. The name change at the time better reflected the growing number of outreach, child welfare, and counseling programs aimed at strengthening family life in the local area.
