Central Illinois is frozen again, so it's a good time for a refresher on the signs of frostbite. Smaller appendages like fingers, toes, ears, and noses are especially susceptible to frostbite! Frostbite occurs when the skin freezes and can cause pain, numbness, swelling, blisters, and even nerve damage. If left untreated, it can result in removal of the affected tissue or limb.

Know the signs and how to treat frostbite! If you have progressed to Stages 2 or 3 of frostbite, please seek medical attention IMMEDIATLY.

Prevention starts with screening. It is recommended that cervical cancer screenings start at age 21 with a Pap smear. Ask your clinician about how you can take control of your health.

La prevención comienza con las pruebas de detección. Se recomienda que las pruebas de detección del cáncer de cuello uterino comiencen a los 21 años con una prueba de Papanicolaou. Pregúntele a su médico cómo puede tomar el control de su salud.

Community health centers like Heartland rely on federal funding to operate effectively. The shared link below will show you how to tell Congress: Protect community health centers on January 30!

As Community Health Centers (CHCs) mark 60 years of saving lives and dollars, they need your help. Federal funding that keeps CHCs open expires January 30, 2026. Without action from Congress, patient access is at risk.

CHCs now care for more patients than ever before, serving 52 million people across 17,000 locations nationwide. They include:

✅ Over 10 million rural residents (1 in 3)

✅ More than 20 million people who live in poverty (1 in 3)

✅ More than 6 million uninsured people (1 in 5)

CHCs serve 1 in 7 Americans, yet account for only 1% of total U.S. healthcare spending, saving Medicaid and Medicare billions of dollars annually by reducing costly emergency, inpatient, and specialty care.

America needs Community Health Centers. Together, we must ensure that every Community Health Center can continue delivering high-quality, affordable care that saves lives.

Vaccines contain small amounts of weakened or dead cells to train our bodies how to fight off the bigger germs out there. How immunologists get these cells is similar to how you harvest fruits from your garden.

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia explains it like making a blueberry pie:
1. Planting: The virus is “planted” in DNA and cells from humans and animals, just like planting seeds for a blueberry bush.
2. Growing: The virus grows until it’s ready to be used, like how blueberries grow on bushes.
3. Harvesting: Immunologists “harvest” the virus. But first, they clean it by removing any extra DNA, just like washing blueberries to remove leaves and stems.
When everything is ready, we get our delicious pie. Or in this case, a lifesaving vaccine!
Call Heartland Health Services at 309-680-7600 or visit hhsil.com to schedule an appointment to update your immunizations.
