Our first Women's History Month figure is Peoria's own Eleanor Jack Gibson. Facing many, many setbacks from a system made to keep women out of "male spaces," Gibson persisted and broke through many barriers often by playing the system's rules against itself to pursue her research. She is credited as co-discovering the "visual cliff," the ability for both newborn animals and human to perceive depth by the time they're able to crawl. She was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1992.

Our final Black History Month post is an excellent segue into one of next month's themes (*hint*hint*). As a child, Dr. Mae Jemison dreamed of being among the stars. Seeing Lieutenant Uhura on Star Trek inspired her, but the lack of women astronauts in real life frustrated her. This cocktail of emotions drove her to attend Stanford University at the age of 16, then attended Cornell Medical School afterwards. After graduating with her M.D. in 1981, Jemison spent time as a medical officer in the Peace Corps and a vaccine researcher at the CDC. She finally made it to space in 1992 where she conducted even more medical research experiments.
