🌟 Grateful Patient Spotlight: Dr. Nick Diehl, DO, Pediatric Resident at the University of Illinois College of Medicine 🌟

A parent recently shared their heartfelt gratitude for Dr. Diehl’s exceptional care during their daughter's hospital stay:

“Dr. Diehl has been amazing! He was the first to believe my daughter’s symptoms before there was even test data to back it up. He went above and beyond to put her at ease. He has consistently fought to reach our goals and kept us informed every step of the way through a scary process. We are forever grateful to Dr. Diehl! His care and compassion made a huge difference!”

Thank you, Dr. Diehl, for making a positive impact on the lives of your patients and their families!

Meet Dr. Lichtenstein, one of our wonderful pediatric ophthalmologists!

1. What’s your favorite thing to do outside of work? Pilot, both fixed wing and lighter than air (hot air ballooning) and skydiving when we were younger 👨‍✈️🛩️🪂
2. What is your work related passion? Seeing the little babies that could have had vision problems, coming back as teenagers and young adults with straight eyes and good vision. Also love research and of course teaching the next generation of physicians the beauty and complexity of the human eye. ✨👁️👶🏻👶🏼👶🏽👶🏽👶🏿👁️✨
3. Why did you choose to work at UICOMP/OSF? Although we are a “small town”, our children’s hospital is one of the best in the country. The tremendous need for world class pediatric care! 🏥
4. Words of wisdom for applicants and pediatric-aspiring medical students? Follow your love and passion, NOT the highest paying specialty! Money will mean very little if you hate going to work, seeing human beings, and not loving seeing every patient. You should feel like you have never worked a day your life. If you love what you do, it is not work! 🩺😍🥼😍

A huge CONGRATS to two of our amazing physicians 🎉

Last week the Illinois Chapter of American Academy of Pediatrics recognized Dr. Shelly Shallat for her leadership in building partnerships and programs to support breastfeeding equity through the Illinois State Physical Activity and Nutrition Programs (ISPAN) project and Dr. Amy Christison for 8 years of service on the Illinois Chapter Executive Committee.

Your passion, dedication, and hard work are endless and inspiring! Way to go, we are proud to call you our UICOMP Peds family ❤️

Meet one of our second years, Dr. Woodin!

1. What do you want to do when you grow up?
Outpatient Peds
2. What’s your favourite thing to do outside of work?
When I get some free time, I love to wood work! During COVID my sister Chloe and I started a small business where I would build our designs and she would paint the final designs!🪵🔨
3. What is your work related passion?
I really enjoy teaching/education, as well as as residency advocacy at the GME level!
4. Why did you choose to rank UICOMP?
When I started the residency application process, I had the benefit of experiencing first hand how great the people and education were at UICOMP throughout my time as a medical student here. As I went through the process, I never found anything that quite lived up to that experience, and I genuinely wanted nothing more than to stay at UICOMP for residency! Matching at UICOMP has provided me with a phenomenal clinical foundation, the ability to be near family, and life long friends!
5. Words of wisdom for future applicants or pediatric-aspiring medical students?
Trust your gut throughout the process! And congratulations for picking the specialty with the cutest patients and the best colleagues! 🤗
6. How do you take your coffee?
Half and half with a couple of pumps of vanilla, and a dash of coffee 😉

We’re celebrating Women in Medicine Month! We had a nationally renowned guest speaker, Dr. H. Barrett Fromme from UChicago give a special presentation for grand rounds this week. Her topic was “Gender Equity in Pediatrics: Action and Allyship for Change”. And we would also like to take the time to congratulate Dr. Kendhari for receiving the Outstanding Faculty, Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity award from UICOMP, as well as Dr. Benavides for her award from the UICOMP Women in Medicine and Science Council. We are proud to be amongst a large group of women in medicine who are nationally recognized and accomplishing great things!
