In this class entitled Build Muscle, Reduce Inflammation to Beat Disease, I will share the 3 fundamental and critical principles to understand if you want to prevent the most common diseases of advancing age.
We have a crisis of pain, disease and frailty in our country!
Metabolic disease including pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, high blood pressure and heart disease, dementia and cancers are all on the rise across ALL age groups.
There ARE common denominators that are fully within our control that can impact whether we will live a healthy, active and independent lifespan.
Reducing the primary culprits requires an understanding of how targeted exercise ( resistance and endurance training) dietary interventions, and mindset are applied to reduce inflammation and chronic disease.

A sad reality but nonetheless one that is impacting our health span. We need to awaken. We can’t afford to stay ignorant of the colossal financial incentives for Big Pharma and Big Food/Agriculture to promote highly processed foods that increase the likelihood of nearly every chronic disease we know, and then to have the “ drug” at the ready to sell you.

Why are Americans sicker than ever despite spending the most on “ health” care? Children are sicker, distracted, diabetic, depressed and overweight like never before in human history. Why isn’t the alarm sounding? What needs to change to reverse the downward spiral of chronic disease Americans are suffering with?
The medical industrial complex is the fastest growing industry yet is failing us on many fronts.

Osteoporosis, muscle weakness and fragility are on the rise among younger and middle aged women and men.
Over 54 million Americans have Osteoporosis or Osteopenia, or low bone mass conditions, and may be susceptible to fractures.
This, like many other chronic inflammatory diseases has dire consequences that are both preventable and reversible.
Sarcopenia (loss of lean muscle) occurs insidiously beginning in our 40s and is the catalyst for loss of bone density and strength, loss of mobility and function and the acceleration of metabolic disease. ( weight gain, diabetes..)
This class will dig deep into root causes, and discuss a natural approach to prevention, treatment and reversal of low bone mass and sarcopenia.

I’m excited to be teaching a new class, entitled Aging Well! Keys to Managing Pain and Disease, on Wednesday March 8th at Grand Learning in Surprise.
This class is a must if you want to understand underlying mechanisms of common diseases we associate with aging and learn what changes you can make that will have the greatest positive impact on your health span!

Do you know what Diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, obesity, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease , Autoimmune disease, and joint pain have in common?
It would seem on the surface that these rapidly increasing disorders are separate and distinct conditions; each one requiring a different medical specialist who then prescribes a pharmaceutical drug to remediate the symptoms. This approach to “sick care” is clearly failing us.
Americans are spending the last 15-20 years of their lives living with 1 or more
Chronic diseases, increasing frailty, pain, and consuming pills that oftentimes creates additional problems in their wake.
How do we begin to make sense of this when the body is never considered as an interconnected whole, but as isolated “parts”?
We end up playing an unsatisfying game of “whack a mole” medicine, chasing symptoms as they pop up in the body.
By the time symptoms are detected, the disease process ( label) has already been developing for a decade or more. This is a window of opportunity that is missed unless you understand that ALL of these disease states have a common denominator.
That common denominator is inflammation which triggers a cascade of undesirable changes in the body leading to disease.
The next question we need to address is why are we so inflamed? We know that Inflammation increases as we age, but why?
A significant amount of Research has concluded that over 90% of chronic disease, like the ones mentioned above, are related to modifiable lifestyle, environmental, and nutritional factors. This is good news because the locus of control returns to us.
It is up to us to learn all that we can to get on the right trajectory for a Healthier, longer life.
For example what diet has been widely studied for reducing inflammation, depression and cognitive decline? What nutrients turn on longevity genes? How does mental-emotional stress impact our lifespan?

An understanding of some simple underlying root causes opens a dimension of possibilities for preventing, managing and reversing these common patterns.

I highly urge any one who is on an earnest pursuit of health to listen to this podcast.
Here you will learn the contributing factors to why the United States spends the most on health care yet our population suffers INCREASINGLY with chronic diseases ( cardiovascular, mental health,cancer, diabetes, obesity…) and decreasing life spans!

You will begin to see how the system is rigged against us being well and how seriously misled we have all been.
Once we glimpse the ‘behind the scenes’ dynamic we can no longer accept this as normal. Sick, tired, overweight and depressed is not normal, yet this is the current state of our population.
95% of medical revenue is generated from chronic diseases facilitated in large part by our food system and current lifestyle.
Medicine and modern innovations offer lifesaving treatment in acute life threatening illness and injury. Yet this is not the bread and butter of medicine.
Doctors are not trained to prevent disease but rather to REACT once you are diagnosed.
80% of medical schools do not require a single course on nutrition ; many receive over 50% of their funding from Big Pharma!

An unfortunate reality is that most serious chronic health disorders take many years and even decades to produce symptoms and reach diagnostic criteria, I.e a disease label. This is an unfortunate missed opportunity to intervene when there is time to reverse the course of disease!

The food industry and their lobbyists use strong arm tactics and financial rewards to promote highly processed foods which damage our cellular machinery. These foods are highly inflammatory and toxic to our bodily systems.
They know these foods are addictive and are making us sick, driving up health care revenues from chronic disease. They are driven by financial gain.
For example, in 1963, the Sugar Research Foundation paid Harvard researchers to refute sugar’s role in heart disease, and as you might guess, researchers gladly provided the results they were paid to produce!
Fat was vilified and sugar glorified.
Have you had a glimpse of the new food pyramid? Through a study funded by big food companies in cooperation with funding by our NIH, they have decided that Lucky Charms cereal is healthier than beef, eggs….!
Since launching “Dietary Guidelines in 1980, obesity, fatty liver disease, diabetes and other conditions have exploded. Children and teenagers are targeted disproportionately for the marketing of highly processed foods and sugary drinks. Children, for the first time in history, are being diagnosed with diabetes ( type 2-adult onset)and fatty liver in record numbers.
The news is not all doom and gloom. As with all challenges an opportunity is baked in.
There is a positive transformation that awaits individually and as a society, but we need to take back control of the reins. We need to stop trusting the establishment and ask critical questions even though we are told to trust the science and not question.
Sometimes it’s as simple as follow the money trail.

Curiosity may have killed the cat, but the lack of it may kill us.

Knowledge is powerful when we take action using it in a way that benefits all.

I wish you hope, healing and joy in the year that lies ahead!
I wish you health in your body, mind and spirit.
It’s worth every ounce of energy and doing all that we can to find a place of peace and gratitude within, even while working towards healing. Even ( and especially) while in the midst of chaos.
It is from this place of peace and gratitude that true healing begins.
It is from the letting go of the buried hurt and trauma that you carry deep inside, that the healing begins.
Sometimes that means letting go of entrenched behaviors, and patterns, and even the people that keep you mired in dysfunction.
And it all starts with acknowledgment, awareness, and compassion for those parts that are speaking to you today, “it’s time to heal”, and “write a new story.”
Your future self, your dreams and goals are beckoning. Each day is a chance to begin again.
Accept the blessings and the brand new beginnings that await.

The holiday season can be particularly difficult for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one, those who are trying their best to cope with physical pain or a chronic illness, those who are having personal trials that shake their sense of peace and wellbeing. That is pretty much all of us experiencing life here on planet earth.
This season of light and love that happens each year at a time when the days are short and the nights are long is a beautiful reminder that we have a reason for hope. We may not see it, if our eyes are fixated on the darkest parts of our lives.
May you find many reasons to have gratitude and hope, and experience peace that surpasses all understanding. That is, in spite of, and in the midst of, anything you may be going through right now.
Health, peace and joy and a a very blessed holiday to all!

Use of non steroidal anti inflammatory medications such as Motrin, Advil etc and steroids will block natural healing following acute injury. Studies have also shown that these medications also cause cartilage degeneration and may exacerbate arthritic changes in the joints.

The reasons that one person’s pain abates while another’s becomes chronic are not currently understood. A new study suggests that inflammation is critical in the healing process of acute issues that cause pain and that suppressing it may be a key trigger in the development of chronic pain. If blocking inflammation in the acute phase can trigger this shift, we may want to consider prioritizing methods of analgesia that don’t block acute inflammation. https://hubs.la/Q01wcsPL0

We have all known someone with the painful and debilitating condition called .
Gout is a form of arthritis caused by accumulation of uric acid crystals in joints, such as in the big toe, but can occur in other joints as well.

What we may not fully understand is that gout is another manifestation of a metabolic disorder, like diabetes.
With our Standard American Diet ( SAD) and the increased consumption of processed foods, refined grains, sugar laden, high glycemic foods, and drinks we are at the highest risk of this disease than ever before in history!

Metabolic dysfunction is the cornerstone to inflammation, accelerated aging, mental and cognitive disorders and many chronic diseases that are both preventable and reversible.
What’s the connection of high Uric acid levels and diet?
Uric acid is the metabolic by product manufactured in the liver from consuming foods high in purines and fructose.
High purine foods include animal proteins, organ meats and shellfish.
Fructose is a sugar that is prevalent in sugary beverages, alcoholic beverages, and processed foods.
The liver simply can not handle the super physiological amounts of these sugars now being consumed in our SAD.
So elevated Uric acid , also called blood hyperuricemia, causes gout, and a host of other health problems. This includes hypertension, high blood sugar, reduced nitric oxide ( poor vessel dilation) , mitochondrial damage, weight gain,cognitive decline and cardiovascular disease. ( see diagram below)

Recent data suggests that only 10% of Americans are metabolically healthy. This means 90%of Americans have high blood pressure, unhealthy blood fats ( dyslipidemia), insulin resistance or diabetes, or obesity!

I discuss the significance of metabolic health and it’s influence on aging, inflammation and disease in my best selling book, Staying Healthy, Living Longer.

A Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving to all!
Today I am reflecting on what gratitude is and the power it has to shift us from a sense of lack and dis-ease, to a state of love, peace, and ease.

I felt gratitude was important enough to our overall health that I dedicated a chapter in my book* to it.

**Here are a couple of excerpts.

“I believe gratitude is fundamental to our capacity for experiencing joy, and true health.”
“If we are to live a full life brimming with eternal hope and optimism, we need a child-like spirit; an awe of life and a deep well of gratitude. This enables us to push back on the unwelcome dark abyss that creeps up on us insidiously cloaking our spirit in a wave of negativity. “
“ Gratitude and a faith filled spirit are the bedrock of an overcoming and victorious spirit, without which we fall prey to the cares and wearing down of this world.”

“Regardless of what is happening all around us, we all have the final and life altering choice to be grateful, allowing our minds to focus on the blessings in our lives rather than the shortcomings. “
“Gratitude is the key that opens the floodgates of “ enough”, “abundance”, and “grace”, and allows our entire being to experience hope, healing, abundance and peace.”

Gratitude is not merely a feeling. I believe It is a way of life, a mental paradigm that has tremendous influence on our physical and emotional well being.”
It is nearly impossible to be in a state of gratitude while simultaneously feeling fearful and unhappy. They can not exist in the same mind space.

I hope today as you are reminded to give thanks, you also make a decision to carry the habit of gratitude into your daily life. It is a gift we can open every day should we choose to!
