It started as an exciting day.

Bailey was 17 weeks pregnant and heading to an ultrasound appointment with her husband, Cori, to learn the gender of their child. But instead of receiving happy news, they found out that their baby had severe birth defects that put the baby’s life in danger.

They were referred to OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois where they were told that the child had the most severe form of spina bifida – but there was hope.
20 weeks passed, and Bailey gave birth to a baby boy, Kane. His first surgery was conducted 24 hours later. Now 3 years old, Kane has had 10 surgeries and will need more, but his future is bright.

"I feel like they have gone above and beyond to help Kane and just make sure that they're making the best choices when it comes to his care and what needs to be done," says Bailey.

Thanks to the care Kane has received, Bailey says that OSF Children’s Hospital feels like home and that Kane’s bravery has made him “always ready to take on whatever is coming at him.”

This annual symposium brings together experts and lived experiences to focus on pediatric congenital heart disease. Attendees will hear from specialists on cardiac catheterization, pediatric neurodevelopment and child life services, along with a patient and family panel discussion.

Salee was hard at work when her water broke, and she went on to give birth to her fourth son, Javere, at just under 22 weeks of pregnancy at OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois.

Weighing only 14 ounces, his chances of survival weren’t good, but little Javere pushed through.

Salee says that her faith grew strong throughout this time. During those difficult moments, the staff not only helped Javere, but also brought comfort to her. She spent time in the chapel and was grateful to have members from the Pastoral Care services pray with her and over her son.

After three surgeries, including two heart surgeries, and more than seven months in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), Javere was able to go home right before Christmas 2024.

“It was like the best Christmas present you can ask for,” Salee said. “I call him my little NICU warrior. … He just fought through everything. Nothing held him back. And still today, nothing holds him back. … He definitely was brave.”

🎅 Santa made a special stop at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)!

With help from the NICU Family Advisory Board, the visit included warm smiles, hot cocoa and cookies for patients and families. A sweet moment that added extra cheer to the day.
