π When the body experiences a painful sensation, the spinal cord plays a vital role in relaying those messages to the brain.
π§ Spinal cord stimulators utilize natural functions of the nervous system to provide pain relief. Dorsal root nerves located in the spinal cord act as a gate, and can control whether or not a pain signal reaches the brain.
β‘As a spinal cord stimulator (SCS) sends gentle electrical pulses through the spine, the dorsal root nerves are occupied and do not allow pain signals to pass through. Depending on the level of frequency of the pulses, some patients may experience a slight tingling sensation called paresthesia.
π’ Because all pain signals travel through the spinal cord before reaching the brain, an SCS can treat a wide range of pain conditions including lower chronic back pain, persistent spinal pain syndrome, diabetic neuropathy, and complex regional pain syndrome.
