🔁 When the body experiences a painful sensation, the spinal cord plays a vital role in relaying those messages to the brain.

🧠 Spinal cord stimulators utilize natural functions of the nervous system to provide pain relief. Dorsal root nerves located in the spinal cord act as a gate, and can control whether or not a pain signal reaches the brain.

⚡As a spinal cord stimulator (SCS) sends gentle electrical pulses through the spine, the dorsal root nerves are occupied and do not allow pain signals to pass through. Depending on the level of frequency of the pulses, some patients may experience a slight tingling sensation called paresthesia.

💢 Because all pain signals travel through the spinal cord before reaching the brain, an SCS can treat a wide range of pain conditions including lower chronic back pain, persistent spinal pain syndrome, diabetic neuropathy, and complex regional pain syndrome.

Last weekend, I completed training for the DRG procedure from Abbott.

👉 DRG neurostimulation targets the dorsal root ganglion nerves in the spine to treat causalgia and complex regional pain syndrome in the hips, legs, ankles and feet, which can be caused by post-surgical trauma.

💜 So thankful for the opportunity to expand my skills in the SCS space and be able to help more people.

Did you know that taking care of your body may be one of the best ways to prevent chronic pain?

😴 Getting enough sleep allows the body to maintain and restore function. A lack of sleep increases sensitivity to pain and blocks hormone centers that provide natural pain relief. Constant fatigue can also lead to conditions like fibromyalgia and migraines.

🏃‍♂️ Exercising doesn't always mean going out for a 5-mile run, sometimes it simply means moving around to stay active. Long periods of inactivity increase risk factors for developing conditions like osteoarthritis due to weakened ligaments.

🍎 A properly balanced diet gives the body nutrients to combat sickness and injuries. The immune system responds to an unhealthy diet in a similar way to a bacterial infection. It increases production of pro-inflammatory compounds, and a constant pro-inflammatory state is one of many causes of chronic pain.

MILD and Vertiflex are both procedures that treat lumbar spinal stenosis, but each one focuses on a specific cause 👇

💜 The MILD procedure is helpful for spinal stenosis conditions caused by enlargement of the ligamentum flavum, which supports the spinal canal as the body moves. Over time, it loses elasticity and becomes thickened, resulting in compressed vertebrae and pinched nerves. MILD removes small pieces of the ligamentum flavum to relieve pressure.

💜 Vertiflex is an implantable device that can address a number of causes of spinal stenosis including an enlarged ligamentum flavum, a herniated disc, or overgrowth of facet joints. This device is inserted between the affected vertebrae, and opens up to remove pressure and provide support.

💜 Although Vertiflex can treat more causes that lead to spinal stenosis, it cannot treat spinal stenosis originating from the L5-S1 vertebrae, whereas MILD can.
