When we give ourselves consistent, unconditional permission to eat a food, our interest and intensity naturally decrease over time; this is habituation. The food becomes less exciting, cravings soften, and eating feels more neutral and satisfying. In contrast, restraint (dieting, rules, or āforbiddenā foods) keeps foods psychologically scarce. That scarcity heightens focus, urgency, and desire, often leading to stronger cravings and overeating. It's no wonder that a growing body of research shows that the more someone diets, the more likely he or she is to engage in binge eating (Holmes et al. 2014).
Permission leads to calm and balance, while restriction fuels preoccupation and loss of control.
