: The Memory Tree by Joanna Rowland (an elementary school teacher) with illustrations by Thea Baker - recommended by ADEC volunteer and FT Kailey Bradley

Grief is hard any time of year, but during the holiday season grief naturally feels heavier and more difficult to navigate. In The Memory Tree, the author describes a child's experience of a recent death. She shares that the holiday lights don't seem to shine as brightly and celebrations don't feel merry. Still, her family find ways to commemorate their lost loved one through the decoration of a special Memory Tree.
This lovely and timely book is a wonderful resource that provides comfort for younger children and grieving families during the holiday season. I appreciated that the tradition described in the book involves entire families, which provides ideas and simple opportunities for sharing memories and stories together.

From the ADEC Communications Team: In addition to the Memory Tree, the same author and illustrator also collaborated on The Memory Box book, which offers creative activities around remembering as well as some grief education. Both titles would make lovely gifts.

This was one of the most informative and coolest experiences I’ve had. I learned so much information, much of which are answers to questions I get as a grief counselor regularly. Gaining information about things that seem very scary can often times help! Understanding these processes are very important! Death education is very important! I love that part of my career!

November is Children's Grief Awareness Month. All month long, we are bringing awareness to childhood bereavement and the many ways we can support children and teens who are grieving.

Join us by following along, sharing our posts, and spreading the word to others. Together, we can help create a more grief-informed society and ensure no child grieves alone.

Huge thank you to our friends at the NACG National Alliance for Children's Grief and the steering committee for leading the efforts to provide educational resources and share stories highlighting the importance of grief awareness.

Great resource!

Children can have lots of thoughts and feelings about the people they care about. This worksheet helps children to connect with those thoughts and feelings by drawing a picture of the person they are missing. It might be someone who has died, someone they can’t spend time with, or someone they see a lot, but are missing in this moment. You can do this activity with one child or a whole group. Let them know they can write or draw their answers and that it’s okay to skip the ones they don’t want to do. You can also expand the conversation by asking them questions about their responses such as, “How do you think they’d answer your question?” “How do you feel when you think of this person?”
