Congratulations to Adelyn Schlegel, RN on our obstetrics unit; Mary Winkler, RN at Mercy Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation; and Shae Mattingly, LPN at Mercy Podiatry – 212 Hospital Lane, for each earning our annual DAISY Foundation Awards for the compassionate nursing care they provide at .
Adelyn was nominated by a patient for her award, “I came into Labor and Delivery very pregnant and extremely ill, very scared as a first-time mom as to what the day could hold for me. Adelyn was so kind and reassuring to me. The next weekend, I came to L&D again and was in active labor, I was absolutely petrified and in so much pain, she asked my boyfriend and I if we wanted her to pray over us. It was so thoughtful and left both of us in tears. Her level of professionalism is absolutely off the charts, but her ability to show care and compassion at the same time is astonishing. ...The following day, while we were going home and she was checking our car seat and seeing us off, she gave me a big hug and told me to call her if I needed anything. I honestly felt sad to go home and not have her positive spirit around anymore. My mom even made a comment about how she thought Adelyn was a friend of mine that I knew beforehand, not a nurse I had just met the weekend before. She truly has a gift for caring for patients and if I ever seek care from Mercy Perry Labor & Delivery again, I pray she is the one taking care of me.”
Mary was nominated by a fellow caregiver for her DAISY Award, “Mary is always thoughtful, compassionate and goes above and beyond for our patients, but this gesture is exemplary! A patient (that Mary is familiar with) was sent home from another hospital with a 30-day heart monitor. It was a little overwhelming for the patient to do the weekly change out of the telemetry patch, so they asked Mary if she would help them. She did not hesitate to help, knowing this would take stress off the patient and ease their worries. Each week, Mary went to the person's home in the evenings to visit and change out the telemetry patch. The time Mary makes available to do this promotes emotional and spiritual healing to this patient all while staying in the comfort of their home.”
Shae was nominated by a patient and two fellow caregivers for her award. The patient’s nomination read, “As my doctor's office nurse, Shae went above and beyond to make sure I received the care I needed during both of my battles with osteomyelitis, which required two surgeries and hospitalizations. She worked tirelessly to coordinate my care, answer every question and guide me through each step of a very overwhelming process. Beyond her professionalism, what meant the most was her compassion. She always made me feel heard, supported and cared for as a person, not just a patient. Her dedication and kindness gave me strength and comfort during one of the hardest times in my life.
