Zero pain. Zero opioids.

There's a groundbreaking new protocol at Hackensack University Medical Center, and it is transforming the recovery experience for breast surgery patients.

By using a regional anesthesia technique, the surgical team is minimizing pain, nausea and recovery time, allowing patients to return home sooner, feel better faster and virtually eliminate the need for post-op narcotics.

It's done using PEC I and II blocks, which numb the skin and muscles of your neck and the nerves within it for several hours.

"Since beginning these procedures, the opioid requirements in these patients has been reduced to zero," says Dr. Christopher M. McGreevy, the associate chief of breast surgery at Hackensack.

And it's changing patients' lives. For Sarah, a stage one invasive ductal carcinoma diagnosis led her to opt for a bilateral mastectomy.

What followed was a surgical experience that defied Sarah's expectations. "I walked out of the hospital myself," she says. "As soon as I came out of sedation, I was able to go to the bathroom. I had no pain at all."

While opioids were prescribed, Sarah never needed them. "The first three days, I just had extra-strength Tylenol at night," she says, adding that it was more for peace of mind than actual pain relief.

Even more remarkable was the absence of post-operative nausea, a common side effect of anesthesia that Sarah had experienced in the past. "No throwing up, no feeling of nausea," she says. "That really helped because the immediate sense of wellness was right there."

Sarah's recovery was astonishingly swift. "In terms of self-care, I didn't need any assistance from day one," she says. She was walking the very next day, covering 3.5 miles with her drains in place. Within a week, she was back to most of her daily activities, and by week three, she had returned to her desk job.

Traditionally opioids have been prescribed to manage post procedure pain but Dr. McGreevy says these highly addictive drugs affect the entire body, leading to potential side effects elsewhere. “PEC blocks directly target the nerves responsible for pain in the surgical area, he says, without the side effects associated with opioids, particularly nausea and constipation that can interfere with a patient's ability to eat, drink, and mobilize, which are crucial for healing and regaining strength after surgery.” He believes we may be first in the country to offer this innovative treatment.

"I think [the PEC blocks] really made a difference," Sarah says. "Otherwise, you come home and you feel so sick with the anesthesia. Your throat's all sore. You're already feeling sick, and then you're not eating well enough. It just impacts your sense of wellness."

For nearly 30 years, Nora Ambros lived with a constant reminder of her victory over breast cancer. After her treatment in 1996, she was left with severe lymphedema, a painful, persistent swelling in her left arm that affected everything she did.

“You survive cancer, and you are so grateful,” Nora recalls, “but then you are left with this daily struggle. I just learned to live with it, to hide it.”

Then, a second cancer diagnosis in 2025 brought an unexpected silver lining: the chance to finally treat the condition that had plagued her for decades.

She turned to Hackensack University Medical Center, where our team was pioneering a new frontier in reconstructive care. We are the first hospital in New Jersey to acquire and use the Symani® Surgical System, a robotic platform designed for the most delicate microsurgeries.

Treating lymphedema requires connecting vessels thinner than a human hair - a procedure that tests the limits of a surgeon's skill. “The Symani system gives us unprecedented stability and precision,” explains Richard M. Winters, M.D., Chair of Plastic Surgery. “It allows us to perform these complex repairs with a higher degree of confidence and success.”

Nora became the very first patient to undergo the procedure, a robotic lymphovenous bypass performed by Dr. Robert Van. The results were life-changing.

“My arm is significantly smaller,” Nora says. “For the first time in decades, I’m wearing short sleeves and I don’t feel like I have to hide. It’s a freedom I thought I’d never have again.”

Her journey is a testament to our commitment to care that extends far beyond the initial fight against cancer. It’s about helping patients live full, healthy lives in survivorship. For countless survivors living with lymphedema, hope has a new home in New Jersey.

Dr. Lukman Hassan's commitment to his patients and team doesn't end with his shift. As an attending at JFK University Medical Center, his days are filled with critical decisions, requiring extraordinary focus and resilience.

Yet he somehow finds a way to go above and beyond. When he completed his overnight shift, a full 12 hours of patient care, he got a call from Michelle, a nurse in the cardiac care unit.

After driving home from a long shift of her own, she'd received upsetting news: Her mother, battling stage 4 lung cancer, had fallen seriously ill. Overwhelmed, she needed guidance from someone she trusted. That was Dr. Hassan.

For his part, Dr. Hassan didn't hesitate. He listened intently, then asked for the address where he should meet them. After the 20 minute drive, he carefully assessed Michelle's mother, finding her struggling to breathe. He knew she'd need immediate care at a hospital.

Observing her fear of hospitals, Dr. Hassan didn't hesitate when Michelle asked him to drive them there. He'd lost his own mother two years earlier.

“I knew exactly how Michelle was feeling,” he says. It was not only empathy, but sympathy that made him determined to help.

When they arrived, that dedication did not waver. Dr. Hassan stayed with Michelle's mother through triage, admission, imaging and testing, personally engaging with the emergency department attending and offering both expertise and assurance.

His efforts were felt. Michelle's mother expressed heartfelt gratitude, embracing him. “She was very sweet and appreciative,” Dr. Hassan says.

Unfortunately, Michelle's mother would later pass away. In some of her final moments, she knew she was cared for by her loving daughter and a compassionate physician.

That impact inspired Michelle to nominate Dr. Hassan for the Exemplary Physician Partnership Award, which he received at a Magnet ceremony during Nurses Week.

“Dr. Hassan’s compassion and commitment to his patients went above and beyond, providing not only expert medical care but also comfort and support during one of the most difficult times in my life,” Michelle says.

True to his humble nature, Dr. Hassan expressed surprise and gratitude upon receiving the award. “I truly didn’t expect to receive the award - it’s a fantastic feeling,” he says “It’s really a team effort, not just me. We have an incredible team at Hackensack Meridian Health and JFKUMC.”

The smallest gestures can make the biggest impact.

Joaquin, a security guard at Carrier Clinic East Mountain School, found himself in one such moment.

He was called to a classroom where a student was visibly distressed. She was refusing to give up her Tamagotchi, and tensions were rising. But instead of approaching with authority, Joaquin tried curiosity.

"She looked genuinely panicked," Joaquin says. "She told me, 'If I don't take care of him, he'll die!'"

Joaquin didn't see defiance. He saw a child trying to protect something important to her. That was what made him ask a simple question: "Can you teach me how to take care of it for you?"

Her eyes lit up and the stress melted away. She eagerly showed Joaquin the buttons, explained the feeding schedule and told him everything he'd need to know. From that moment on, Joaquin says, he was the official Tamagotchi-sitter.

"I was feeding, playing with, and cleaning up after this little digital pet between classes," he says. "She would stop by my office to check on him, asking 'How's he doing?' or 'What's his weight?' I made sure he was clean and his happiness bar was full before handing him back."

And since it didn't have a name, Joaquin gave him one - Tomo the Tamagotchi.

"It was such a small thing," Joaquin says, "but it made all the difference." The student felt heard, respected and supported - and the potential conflict dissolved without further escalation. What could have turned into a power struggle became a meaningful connection.

It's a reminder we can all use, and a powerful moment neither Joaquin nor the student will soon forget, and an inspiring lesson we can all use.
