St. Margaret's Health - Peru

St. Margaret's Health - Peru Welcome to St. Margaret’s Health, the premier provider of healthcare in the Illinois Valley since St. Margaret’s Health and St. Rev. Mary’s Hospital in LaSalle.

Margaret’s Hospital was founded in November of 1903 by seven sisters from Sisters of Mary of the Presentation, a group of nuns expelled from France by an anti-religious government. At the time, Spring Valley was a large coal mining camp. Laws protecting miners were few and accidents and deaths were frequent. John Power, pastor of the Immaculate Conception Church recognized the need for a hospital

facility. He appealed to the Sisters of Mary of the Presentation to staff the new hospital. Twenty-five acres of land and a two-story frame house
were donated by Father Power, and so it began. People’s Hospital in Peru opened in 1914 and became Illinois Valley Community Hospital in 1976 when it merged with St. The St. Mary’s building—which was located where the Illinois Veterans’ Home now stands—was closed following the merger. Expansion of the People’s campus began immediately and culminated with the opening of an 80-bed addition in 1979. Moving forward, further expansions were made. Some notable
additions include:

Building a parking garage and adding a second floor
to the West Street office building and then connecting
it to the hospital with a skybridge in 1994. Opening the Women’s Health Care Center in 2000. Once more adding to the main hospital building in 2003
with the opening of the East Addition, which included
an expanded emergency department and a new
surgical unit. Opening a new obstetrics unit and a new intensive
care unit in 2011 by adding a third floor to the
East Addition. Opening a Wound and Hyperbaric Center in 2013. The Hygienic Institute in LaSalle, which, like IVCH,
opened in 1914, became part of the Peru hospital
in 1996. On January 1, 2021, St. Margaret’s Hospital and IVCH finalized arrangements to consolidate their healthcare operations to form a regional health network. Just as St. Margaret’s Hospital was renamed St. Margaret’s Health – Spring Valley, Illinois Valley Community Hospital is now renamed St. Margaret’s Health – Peru. As most of you have now heard, effective at 7 a.m., Saturday, January 28, 2023, all acute hospital services at St. Margaret’s Health – Peru will close. This will include ICU, Emergency Department services, Obstetrics, Med-Surg/Peds, all surgeries, Lab, X-Ray, and other outpatient hospital services. This will NOT affect primary and specialty clinics, nor physical therapy services at the Illinois Valley YMCA.

Effective Thursday, January 26, 2023, area EMS agencies will begin taking critical or life-threatening patients to the nearest emergency room. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if you have a medical emergency.

This outcome was never a part of our plan or goal when deciding to merge with former Illinois Valley Community Hospital. Together, we had shared a vision for more efficient delivery of high quality healthcare in the region and an opportunity to combine resources to enhance the services provided. Despite our efforts to consolidate and streamline services to encourage a stronger financial position, factors beyond our control have brought about many unforeseen fiscal hardships.

In a healthcare climate already plagued by economic concerns that have been growing for years, the COVID-19 pandemic, a cyber-attack (which prevented SMH from being able to bill nor get paid, in a timely manner, for the services we provided), and severe staff shortages have compounded this problem. Like many, we too, have had to contend with the rising costs of goods and services, as well.

With these hardships in mind, we set out to explore an opportunity to pursue the conversion of one of our hospitals into a new type of hospital called a Rural Emergency Hospital (REH). The REH designation (which was recently established by the federal government to address the growing concern over closures of rural hospitals nationally) seemed like a promising new opportunity to keep both our hospitals open.

Unfortunately, more unforeseen circumstances have hindered this plan. Our current provider of emergency room physician coverage at St. Margaret’s Health – Peru terminated their contract, effective 7 a.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2023. At present, we are not able to find, nor financially support, a new ER provider. Furthermore, despite recruitment efforts, we have been unable to attract enough staff to continue to operate both hospitals.

Because of this, we must temporarily suspend operations at SMH-Peru hospital. IDPH has advised us that hospitals cannot operate without an open and fully-staffed emergency room.

Please know the true essence of St. Margaret’s Health has always been, and still is, our employees and the citizens of the communities we serve. They are the most important assets we have, and without them, we cannot achieve our mission. As such, we would like to apologize to our employees and the community for not delivering our announcement in the best way possible. It was never our intent to blindside any of our employees or the community with such a sensitive and life-impacting announcement. As we move forward, we are working to improve our communication (to both our internal employees and the community alike).

Please bear in mind, these developments are new and unfamiliar territory for our St. Margaret’s Health Administration and Board of Directors. We are working to do our best to navigate these troubled waters and ask for your patience. We will continue to provide updates and clarifications as we learn more and become aware of any misinformation or confusion.

For more than a century, we have cared deeply for the communities we serve and our care is built on just that—community.

Orthopedic injuries from falls are inevitable during these winter months. Mayo Clinic offers tips on how to decrease the number of winter falls:

• Assess Risky Locations – Check to see if the ground is slippery before stepping outside.
• Allow for extra time – Being in a hurry can increase your risk.
• Dress Appropriately – Wear footwear with treads and good traction.
• Always bring a cellphone – In case you do fall, always have your phone with you.
• Clear your walkways.

Creating new habits can be difficult. Change is hard. January is the perfect month for change and setting your year’s tone!

Here are a few things that you can adopt to begin a healthier lifestyle:

1. CREATE A JOURNEY. Adopting a healthier lifestyle is not limited to those numbers or even specific goals. Improving your health or maintaining good health is a journey
2. COUNT THE COST. Sit down and count the cost both figuratively and financially. What will not putting your health at the top of the list of priorities cost you?
3. VISUALIZE IT & SPEAK IT. Can you imagine yourself healthier? Can you see yourself aging well? Do you have a vision for your life? Do you picture it in your head?
4. CHOOSE THINGS THAT YOU LOVE. If you dislike running, hitting the treadmill will not be a motivator for you. Find things you love to do that are active. What activities do you enjoy? Exercise and choosing healthy options don’t have to be limited.
5. PAIR A FUN ACTIVITY WITH A REQUIRED ACTIVITY Listen to your favorite authors or binge on your favorite show while you walk or exercise. Plan your weekly meals while you are getting a pedicure. What can you get done at the same time?
6. SMALL STEPS Expecting a large, permanent change in a short time can be so overwhelming that you mentally give up before you even begin. Start today!

January is Cervical Cancer Screening Month. According to the National Cancer Institute, Cervical cancer was once a leading cause of cancer death for women in the United States. Today, screening and prevention have significantly reduced the impact of this form of cancer. Still, nearly 14,500 women in the United States received a diagnosis of cervical cancer and more than 4,200 died from the disease last year.

A preventable measure you can take today is scheduling your annual pap smear.

12/01/2022

Due to the recent surge in upper respiratory illnesses, we are seeing an increasing demand for medical services and, as a result, increasing wait times at our facilities. We are asking for the community’s help. Most of these illnesses will resolve on their own in 10-14 days and do not necessarily require a visit. They can be managed with supportive care like rest, fluids and over-the-counter medications. Disease spread can also be controlled by wearing a mask and staying home when ill.

Reasons to seek care may be:
• Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
• Ribs pulling in with each breath
• Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
or abdomen
• Severe muscle pain, weakness or unsteadiness
(child refuses to walk)
• Dehydration (no urine for 8 hours, dry mouth or no tears when crying)
• Not alert or interacting when awake/confusion
• Seizures
• Fever above 104°F
• Any fever in children younger than 12 weeks
• Fever or cough that improves but then returns
or worsens
• Worsening of chronic medical conditions
This list is not all-inclusive. Please consult your medical provider for any other symptom that is severe or concerning.

Please consider if a medical visit is truly warranted so that our resources can be used for those most in need. If a visit is needed, please be aware that wait times may be longer than usual, and your patience is greatly appreciated. Our goal is always to provide the best possible care for the community, and we are here to serve you. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this time.
