As a caregiver, if a client requests that you do not wear perfume or deodorant, the priority is to respect their comfort and health, as strong scents can trigger allergies, asthma, migraines, or nausea.

Here are 3 tips on what caregivers should do:

1. Comply Immediately and Respectfully

- Remove the scent: If you are wearing perfume, cologne, or scented lotion, offer to wash it off immediately or change your clothes if possible.

- Switch to unscented: Switch to unscented deodorant, soap, and laundry detergent on days you work with that client.

- Do not take it personally: Understand that this is a professional boundary designed for client comfort and safety, not a personal attack.

2. Communicate with the Caregiving Agency - Report the request:

- Inform your supervisor or agency that the client has a fragrance-free request. This ensures it is documented in the care plan, allowing other caregivers to follow the same protocol.
