Do I need sunscreen if my moisturizer has SPF?

The SPF in moisturizer is tested in the same way as the SPF in sunscreen, so it should provide the same level of protection. But before you drop the sunblock from your skincare routine, know that there is a caveat.

Compared to sunblock, moisturizers are less likely to be water resistant and they often do not contain UVA protection which means that only a good sunblock will protect your skin from UV ageing.

Sunblock is one of the three daily care must-haves or the ABC’s of skincare, as we call them:
A - vitamin A
B - block (SPF)
C - vitamin C

If you’re wearing sunblock every day, then you already know about the number-one rule for sun protection. But what about the equally important step two - proper reapplication?

Let’s talk about how often you should reapply sunscreen.

While the general recommendation is to reapply every two hours for consistent sun protection, there are some factors to consider:

Your activity levels - if you’re swimming, sweating, driving or just sitting next to a window, then reduce the periods between applications, typically to 80 minutes.
Coverage - it is important to use the right amount of sunscreen. This means applying the equivalent of two tablespoons of sunscreen to your face and body, making sure to cover sensitive areas such as your neck, tops of your ears and under eyes.
