Have you ever been told, “You don’t need glasses, just readers”?

It’s a similar story with hearing. After a thorough evaluation, some of our patients aren’t candidates for full hearing aids, but could still benefit from a bit of hearing support.

Let’s talk about Apple’s hearing features because they’re actually amazing! I get this question a lot from patients: “Can my iPhone or AirPods help with my hearing?”
Short answer? Yes, sometimes. While they’re not a replacement for hearing aids, they can be a great tool for those who need just a bit of assistance in certain situations.

Here are a few of our favorite Apple accessibility features for hearing:

🔊 Live Listen: This one turns your iPhone into a little microphone that streams sound directly to your AirPods or Made for iPhone hearing aids. It’s super helpful in noisy restaurants or meetings.
💬 Live Captions: Get real-time captions on phone calls, FaceTime, or even videos. Honestly, it’s a game-changer if you miss a word here or there.
🎶 Headphone Accommodations: You can adjust how your AirPods amplify sound, making things clearer and more balanced for your hearing needs.

If you have an iPhone or AirPods and want help setting these up, we're happy to walk you through it. These tools are meant to make your life easier and your hearing better!

📩 Contact us if you want to try any of these out at your next visit!

Hair today, gone tomorrow? 👂Get it? 😂

Let’s talk about the fuzzy topic no one wants to bring up: hairy ears.

👂Yes, ears can grow hair. And no, it’s not just a grandpa thing. As we age, ear hair tends to show up uninvited. But don’t worry, we’re not here to judge your follicles. We’re here to check your hearing, not your grooming habits (though we’ve seen it all and still think you’re great).

💬 If your ears are starting to sprout more than sound, it might be time for a hearing check too. Call to schedule an appointment!

“I hope I don’t have wax in my ears!”

We hear this all the time when we're about to check someone’s ears, and I always reassure them: earwax isn’t bad! 👂✨

In fact, your ears are supposed to have wax. It’s your body’s natural way of keeping your ears clean and protected. Earwax has antifungal and antibacterial properties that help prevent infections. 🙌

The only time it becomes an issue? When there’s too much of it and it forms a plug (think: putting an earplug in your canal). That’s when it can start to affect your hearing.

If you’re someone who gets a buildup often, regular ear cleanings can make a big difference.

Call us if you want to get checked or learn more about safe wax removal!

💬 “Growth is painful. Change is painful. But nothing is as painful as staying stuck somewhere you don’t belong.” — Mandy Hale

👂 Hearing loss is more than just “missing a few words.” It affects how we connect, how we communicate, and how we feel about ourselves. And making the choice to address it? That can be scary.

Change is hard. Wearing hearing aids might feel like admitting something you’ve been avoiding. The process might feel overwhelming. You might worry about how others will see you.

But staying stuck in the frustration, the isolation, the constant guessing game. THAT is far harder in the long run.

💡 Choosing to hear better is choosing growth. It’s choosing relationships, confidence, safety, and joy.

And we promise, you don’t have to do it alone. We’re here to guide you, step by step!

👀 Did you see in the news?!👂

🔬 Exciting advancements are on the horizon in the field of audiology! Two patients in Tucson have become the first in the U.S. to receive the Acclaim, a FULLY implanted cochlear implant that operates without any external equipment. This innovative device is currently undergoing clinical trials at select centers nationwide, including the Center for Neurosciences at Tucson Medical Center.

🦻 Unlike traditional cochlear implants that rely on external microphones and processors, the Acclaim utilizes a sensor that couples to the hearing bones, effectively turning the eardrum into a natural microphone. A rechargeable battery implanted in the chest powers the device, allowing for induction charging by simply placing a charger on the chest. This design aims to provide users with a more seamless and discreet hearing experience.

📊 While the Acclaim is still in the clinical trial phase, the initial results are promising and represent a significant step forward in hearing restoration technology.

👍 At Kenwood Hearing Centers, we stay on top of the latest developments in audiology to provide our patients with informed guidance and care. If you have questions about cochlear implants or other hearing solutions, our team is here to help!

🕯️"Does ear candling really work?"

We love that people ask this, but we DO NOT recommend it. EVER.

Despite the hype, that brown goo left in the candle isn’t your earwax, it’s just melted candle residue. Plus, those hollow candles can drip hot wax into your ear canal and even burn your eardrum. 😱

👍Save yourself the risk. Let a licensed professional handle earwax removal safely.

👂 So apparently… our ears try to perk up when we’re really focused on a sound!

📚 We just read this fascinating article about how researchers are studying tiny ear muscles we don’t even realize we’re using. Turns out, these muscles could potentially help create smarter hearing aids, ones that actually respond to how hard you’re trying to listen in a noisy room. 🤯

🦻 We already know hearing is way more than just volume: it's about focus, fatigue, and effort. This kind of research could totally change how hearing aids work in the future!

If hearing feels more like a workout than it should, let’s chat. There are great solutions already available, and even cooler tech on the way.

🎓📣 Hear we go again... back to campus!

Whether you’re starting undergrad or diving into a grad program, a new school year means new routines, new environments, and new hearing needs.

If you use hearing aids or assistive technology, here are a few quick tips we always share with our college and grad students:

🔌 Charge up & back up. Keep extra batteries or a charger in your bag. You never know when a lecture might go long!
📱 Use your hearing aid app. Adjust settings on the fly for noisy classrooms, labs, or busy student centers.
🗣️ Take advantage of campus accessibility services. Remote mics, captioning, and preferred seating. All these accommodations are there to support your success!
🎧 Consider additional tools. Bluetooth accessories and streaming devices can make a huge difference for lectures or study time.

✏️ Heading back to class should be exciting, not stressful. If you’re unsure how to make your hearing tech campus-ready, I’d love to help.💬 Send us a message and we’ll get you set up to hear your best this semester!
