There's a lot of debate about white sage and whether or not it's an open or closed practice, but many people don't know where the concept of using "sage" specifically for cleansing came from.
The Ojibwe people are the tribe that popularized the use of sage for cleansing a space. They have a specific practice for it and traditional stories and beliefs that support the practice. There is a bit of debate amongst them as to whether or not the practice is open, but many of them believe that not only is the practice open but because of their specific beliefs and prophecies it should be shared with all peoples.
It is important to indicate that the tradition of cleansing with sage is based on using prairie sage, not white sage. White sage is actually a sub species of Salvia, and has its own uses and traditions with the indigenous tribes of western America. Those tribes have claimed that the practice is closed, a great deal of that is due to over harvesting of wild white sage for the sake of commercial consumption. This harvesting is threatening endangerment and possible extinction of this sacred plant.
Prairie sage can be useful for cleansing, especially if you are buying from indigenous sources, as the Ojibwe have a close relationship with the land and know how to harvest it sustainably. But it also should be stated that sage is not the only cleansing herb you can burn. There are many plants with this quality that have long histories of use. It just takes a little research and you can find a plant that fits you and your needs ๐ Also growing your own cleansing herbs in a garden or pots is a great sustainable option!
