I am not a football person. Or at least that’s what I would have said when our youngest son decided he wanted to play football three years ago.
The first year he played I felt like a fish out of water. These were not my people, I felt so different from them. I felt far away from them. And to be honest, I didn’t try to get closer. I let those differences take up space between us. But to really see who people are, we have to be willing to lean in with curiosity, not pull back with judgment.
I probably stand on a different side of the aisle as a lot of the other parents, we probably have different things we are passionate about. But when we are sitting in the stands watching our kids play this game they love, we are all the same parent. The parent that shows up, the parent that supports their kids, the parent that cheers on the team, collectively holding our breath in hopes that they all come off the field in one piece. When you lean in, you see the commonality. And in that there is connection, belonging.
I over heard Simon’s coach at the end of practice one day giving the team a talk that went something like…
“you don’t play this game for yourself. you play for the guy to the right of you and you play for the guy to the left of you. One person doesn’t make a touchdown, it takes the whole team to make it down the field together. And the way we do that is by playing for each other, having each other’s backs”.
Honestly, I got a little choked up.. and I thought this is what we need more of in our world! We need coaches out there reminding us that the way we get down the field is not by doing it alone, but by playing for each other. Showing up for each other. Having each other’s backs… not just the people we see eye to eye with but every one. We really are all on the same team. There is always something that we have in common; we are human beings just trying to make it down the field. Every human deserves a team that has their backs.
I have to say, for someone who’s isn’t a football person I’ve gained an awful lot of insight and wisdom from the sport. Maybe I am a football person after all…
