Meet Northern Community Mediation's Board of Directors Vice-President Cyndy Tonklavich. She and her family sailed the Great Lakes for years. It was their dream to live in northern Michigan. They found a perfect piece of land on the south arm of Lake Charlevoix where they built their retirement home. Cyndy is a mother, a grandmother, and a retired 5th grade teacher. She understands that when conflict and anger interfere with life, families and children suffer. She believes mediation can help people through these difficult times.

Meet Kirstyn Horan, Northern Community Mediation's new president of the Board of Directors. She serves as the Community Health Coordinator / Community Connections HUB Coordinator at the Health Department of Northwest Michigan, bringing over eight years of experience in public health with a focus on health education and prevention. She holds certification in Youth Mental Health First Aid and is trained in mediation, having facilitated general civil, divorce, and VORP mediation cases.

At noon on Thursday, January 15, people gathered at City Park Grill in Petoskey for Northern Community Mediation's (NCM) annual meeting. Executive Director Dr. Jane Millar was once again delighted in being able to report that NCM is strong, stable and a vital part of the community. The entire annual report is posted on NCM's website.

One of the challenges that non-profits face is having to raise money to cover expenses. Northern Community Mediation has always been successful in doing so. Why Because we have FUN planning our events. That is why we have our FUNding Committee. We plan FUN FUNdraisers. Set aside Monday, March 16 for our annual Oscars After Party. Lots of food, lots of prizes, lots of fun. A do-not-miss event.

What a treat! On Monday, January 5, the Marty Van De Car Chef's Challenge was held in the Safe Restaurant at the Odawa Casino. The purpose of the fund raiser was to raise money for scholarships at North Central Michigan College. Three chefs competed, each one serving three courses. One of those chefs was our very own board member Krstin Hasse. For the Amuse-Bouche, she prepared a warm winter brie, for the appetizer Oyster Rockefeller topped with a smoked pork belly, and for the entree Korean short ribs. To die for.

Attendance is essential for a child to be successful in school. That is why Northern Community Mediation offers free mediation services to the schools to address a student's attendance. By bringing school personnel, parents and students together, with the help of the mediator, they can come up with a plan to improve attendance. And, in 85% of the cases that are referred to mediation, attendance improves.
