The Director of the Mackinac Bridge Kim Nowack visited our community to delve into the history of the”Mighty Mac.” This major innovation certainly affected all generations as the 2 land masses of Michigan were connected enabling millions of people access to the upper peninsula. Our residents were treated with hand made Mackinac Island fudge for tasting. Kim explained the history and current-day challenges maintaining this modern engineering marvel.

Today we celebrate the innovation of glass blowing, a technique for shaping molten glass by blowing air into it. This technology was demonstrated at the East Jordan Glassworks gallery that we visited today. Glass blowing has been around for some time, invented by Syrian craftsmen many generations ago. Our residents had a live view of this fascinating art. They shopped for hand blown glass art after the informative tour and demonstration.

☀️💦 Summer fun was in full swing at the Independence Village Fishers East pool party! Residents splashed, danced, and soaked up the sunshine with water balloon battles, a slip and slide, and even a wheelchair and walker wash station to make sure everyone was included in the fun. 🤩✨

“The Generation of Innovation” week included a day focused on innovations in the logging/ lumber industry in Michigan. Ironwood, MI singer/storyteller Bill Jamerson presented a program of songs and stories about life in the lumber camps of Michigan. Inventions affected how early immigrants navigated their lives and work in the woods.

“The Generation of Innovation” week continues with our residents touring the Music House Museum in Traverse City. Innovations in music are displayed with a unique collection of instruments that provide guests with a walk through the history, the artistry and the engineering of automated music. The residents enjoyed a picnic box lunch after having a detailed guided tour of this fascinating museum.

We featured an old fashioned candy cart that visited all of our residents’ apartments. There was candy that was popular in 5 different decades that was distributed to all residents! Candy necklaces, old fashioned taffy, Sugarbabies, Dad’s root beer barrels, Teaberry gum, Candy ci******es, Bazooka gum, and Lemon Drops were among the selection of old generation candies! 🍭 Our residents applauded this trip down memory lane, enjoying a taste from their pasts!

This Sunday we kick off our week long event, “The Generation of Innovation.” A special Brunch will highlight innovations over the generations in food and how we prepare it. The brunch will feature foods and decor from several eras our residents lived in.

Our residents had a personal tour of the Harris Gardens at North Central Michigan College. Heidi Finley, the president of the college’s wife gave an in depth overview and tour of all of the 26 vibrant sculpture pieces that adorn the park. The variety of artistic styles in each of the sculptures is dramatic. The artists who created these pieces of art come from across the U.S. The sculptures inspire all who visit.

This week we have been in the process of hatching caterpillars into butterflies. We have provided them with a suitable habitat, food source (milkweed) and proper care throughout their life cycle. The caterpillars form into a chrysalis and eventually hatch into a beautiful Monarch butterflies!

Abstract art can be fun to create, especially in the summer! Our residents had “ a blast,” while blasting blank canvas with washable paints from sq**rt guns! Loads of laughs and smiles were noticed as our paint gun slingers created beautiful abstract paintings! A warm July evening hailed for this fun outdoor activity!
