Ergonomic tips for work:

Lift Smart – Bend at your knees, not your waist. Keep loads close to your body.
Distribute Weight – Use backpacks or tool belts that evenly distribute weight across your body.
Use the Right Tool – Choose tools designed for comfort and repetitive tasks—look for padded handles and ergonomic grips.
Mind Your Posture – Avoid awkward positions for long periods. Adjust your stance or use support when possible, and bring objects to waist height when possible using a stand or cart.
Take Micro-Breaks – Stretch and reposition throughout the day to reduce strain and fatigue.

Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by prolonged stress — especially in the workplace. It often includes feelings of detachment, negativity, and reduced performance. A workplace that supports emotional well-being can reduce feelings of burnout, leading to more resilient and engaged employees who are able to handle challenges effectively. A few simple strategies include:

Encouraging Open Communication: Foster a culture where employees feel safe sharing concerns.

Promoting Work-Life Balance: Support flexible schedules and reasonable workloads.

Offering Mental Health Resources: Provide access to counseling, wellness apps, or employee assistance programs.

Recognizing Achievements: A little appreciation goes a long way in boosting morale.

Creating a Supportive Environment: Train managers to lead with empathy and understanding.

Pre-employment physicals help employers ensure that candidates are physically and mentally capable of performing job duties safely and effectively. These exams reduce the risk of workplace injuries, improve productivity, and lower healthcare and workers' compensation costs. They also help verify that new hires meet industry-specific health requirements, supporting a healthier, more reliable workforce.

When employees are physically capable and healthy, they're less likely to experience job-related injuries or health issues that lead to early resignation or termination. This alignment leads to better job satisfaction, fewer missed workdays, and longer employee retention.

ExpressMD can work with your company to provide pre-employment physicals, drug screens, DOT exams, and more—contact us today!

Texas is the only state that gives private employers a choice in providing state regulated workers’ compensation coverage. Businesses that provide workers’ compensation coverage are called “subscribers.” Those who do not are called “non-subscribers.” Sometimes, non-subscribing companies create alternative insurance programs to cover work injuries. While there are many differences between subscribing to state regulated workers’ compensation insurance and not, a few key differences are:

-Subscribers provide injury care regardless of fault

-For subscribers, the benefits for injured workers are set by the state (not by the employer)

-Subscribing companies cannot typically be sued for additional damages like pain and suffering

ExpressMD works with both subscriber and non-scriber companies to provide injury care to workers. Certain aspects of your care can be influenced by your company’s subscriber status, and we are happy to explain when these regulations come up!

Did you know that 5 minutes of stretching at the start of your shift can significantly reduce the risk of workplace injuries?

Whether you're behind a desk or on your feet all day, muscles can tighten, and posture can suffer—leading to strains, sprains, and overuse injuries.

Stretching helps by:
✅ Improving flexibility and range of motion
✅ Boosting blood flow to muscles
✅ Reducing fatigue and stiffness
✅ Preparing the body for repetitive tasks

Start your day with gentle neck rolls, shoulder shrugs, and hamstring stretches. Prevention is part of protection—make stretching part of your safety culture.

If you are seeking to transfer the care of your worker’s compensation injury, generally the first place to begin is getting approval by your worker’s compensation insurance carrier by notifying either your employer or your adjuster. After getting approved, you should be notified of which other locations you can seek care at. It is important to note that many places who see injured workers have an approval process for those wishing to transfer the care of their existing worker’s compensation injury— you may need to await a review of your case and approval by the clinic before you can be seen. While waiting can be frustrating, it is important for your medical team to understand what treatments you have undergone, the length of these treatments, and how the clinic can be of help to you in treating your injury. If you are seeking to transfer your care to ExpressMD, please let us know so we can obtain your medical records from your current provider to review your case!

By recognizing the risks and knowing the signs of overheating, you can take action early to protect your health and the health of your team. If you begin feeling overheated or notice a coworker showing signs of heat
exhaustion, follow these steps:

-Get to a cooler area: Move to a shaded area or indoors with air conditioning if possible.
Hydrate: Drink plenty of water—avoid sugary or alcoholic drinks as they can dehydrate you further.
-Rest: Lie down with your legs elevated to help improve circulation and reduce strain on the heart.
-Cool off: Use cool (not ice-cold) water, wet towels, or a fan to lower your body temperature.
-Seek medical attention if needed: If symptoms don’t improve after cooling down and hydrating, or if they worsen, seek medical help immediately. If there are signs of heat stroke, such as a high temperature, confusion, agitation, slurred speech or seizures, seek emergency medical attention.

As the temperatures rise, those working in construction are at an increased risk of heat-related illnesses. The nature of the work—often outdoors, in direct sunlight, or around hot machinery—can quickly lead to overheating if proper precautions aren’t taken. Understanding the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke is crucial for preventing serious health issues on the job. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe during those hot summer days on site.

Above, we have two distinct degrees of overheating, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

In the next 2 posts, we will review first aid that can be initiated for overheating as well as steps that can be taken to prevent overheating.

Effective June 23, 2025 the FMCSA will be integrating medical examiner certification cards into an electronic system that will be directly available to the Department of Motor Vehicles. This means that if you are a CDL applicant or holder, you will no longer be receiving a paper copy of your medical card. For more details on this integration from the Texas Department of Public Safety, see here: https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/commercial-driver-license
