Yesterday I worked my last day at Phenix Speech and Language Services, Inc. where I have been the last 7yrs. Our leader and mentor is retiring. Next week I will start orientation with Lee County Schools and be an SLP at West Smiths Station. I am so very grateful for the time I’ve had here and for the doors God has opened for me to walk through. As I think about the transition from working in private practice for 10yrs to working in the schools, I know what I will miss the most is seeing the whole families and working with parents more directly. So the rest of this post is an open letter to my clients and their families from Bright Start and Phenix Speech. To my kids and clients: I want you to know that I love you. This is so much more than a job to me because of you. I truly believe that your thoughts and feelings matter and that you deserve to be heard and understood. Watching you grow in your communication skills is my greatest joy. I remember you. Probably more than people realize. I’m always here if you need me and I’m so proud of you. To the parents and families of these precious souls, thank you. Thank you for trusting me. Thank you for getting your person the help that they need. I want you to know I see you. I see how exhausting it is to run back and forth to appointment after appointment. To fight to get the help you need. I see your tears. When your eyes welled up as I diagnosed your perfect baby. Because it’s so hard to hear that they are behind. Tears of relief when I suggested that you have your child assessed for autism and you said “Thank God you see it too. Eveyone told me I was crazy for thinking that.” Then the first time your child spoke, or signed, or sang a song and you couldn’t contain your joy. Neither could I. I want you to know I fought back tears too. The first time your adopted child referred to you as “mom and dad” in a session. The time they told me all about their trip to grandma and grandpa’s because they had not been and to tell me about their holiday last year. The first time they said my name. When they went to the hospital and I was scared. When Elijah McClain was killed and I began to fear for your sons when they leave the safety of my office. When your child graduated from speech and I had to let them go knowing it was a good thing but also that I would miss them. I see how you fight. I see how you sacrifice. I see how lonely it can be. But you do it all with passion and grace… Because love is the most motivating force in the world.

To my dear staff, colleagues, physicians, and supporters,
With mixed emotions, I am announcing my retirement on August 1st and the closing of Phenix Speech and Language Services, Inc. As CEO of the company, I wish to thank all of you for allowing us to affect the lives of so many adults and children over the past 12 years here in Phenix City Alabama. Thanks to all physicians and families for entrusting your patients/family members to our care. I am so thankful for the lasting relationships that I have established.
My entire career as a speech-language pathologist spans over 47 years. I have been blessed to touch the lives of hundreds of children and adults in a variety of settings (home health, schools, skilled nursing, universities, hospitals, and 3 private clinics which I started from scratch. To God be the glory!
As I close the doors to Phenix Speech and Language Services, Inc., please know that each of you holds an indelible place in my heart. I wish to thank all therapists and staff who helped the clinic from its inception up to this day. I especially thank Mrs. Pamela Butler for putting her career on hold to serve as my office manager for 8 years. You were always the glue that held the office together. To God be the glory!
Finally, there is a great need for speech therapy services here in Phenix City, Alabama. I pray that qualified clinicians will heed the call and consider continuing the services that have been started. Please know that I am available to assist in any way to ensure that services are continued.

Love and Many Blessings to all,
Dr. Mary Hudson, Founder/CEO

💥EASY💥 ways to teach priority words on a daily basis!

The key here is modeling the word in repetition 4-5x as you do what you’re saying (ex: saying “up” as their body is lifted up/ they’re experiencing “up”) and pausing and ✨waiting✨

The pause is sooo important in order to give your little one space to plan in their little mind what it is they want to say and actually say it! Little brains need time to motor plan & execute that plan.

If you’re loving these tips on priority words, stay tuned for next week because I’m teaming up with .signs to help teach you priority signs! Yes that’s right- sometimes imitating a sign can be easier than saying the word, as motor imitation typically precedes verbal imitation.

You won’t want to miss this!
