The word holistic means to look at something as a whole. A healthy home for a healthy family isn’t just about the food you use in your kitchen, but also about your tools, cleaning supplies, and the vibe of love and connection.

I’m a pharmacist not a chef but the kitchen is the biggest area I incorporate health into my family’s routine. Food IS medicine. I nurture and heal my household through cooking. I hope this inspires you to explore the same!

Our thyroid hormones are responsible for so many metabolic functions in our body. And I don’t mean metabolism as in weight gain or loss.

We’re talking digestion, absorption of nutrients, sleep patterns, brain function, energy levels, & more!

Often times clients will complain initially of poor energy, hair loss, and difficulty losing weight. After we do a deep dive we also connect to dots and realize there is irregular digestive symptoms, inability to concentrate or brain fog, inconsistent sleep, changes in libido or cycles, and imbalanced blood sugar.

The point is that you may have symptoms you ignore, just deal with or have learned to live with and how to avoid but that is not normal. You deserve to not have to worry about them and not have to modify your life to avoid them.

And doing a thyroid lab deep dive is an easy first place to start! Remember it’s TSH, T4, T3, Reverse T3, and TPO & TBG antibodies we want to get tested.

Other reasons to do a thorough thyroid lab check and whole body symptom assessment include significant stressors in your life or past traumas, family thyroid issues, postpartum any amount of time, and perimenopausal or menopausal.

And remember, as your functional pharmacist bestie, I’m only a click away to help you get those labs, review them, and make a plan to get you feeling great! 🦋🥰

⚠️WARNING⚠️ Just because a drug is “well tolerated” or sold over-the-counter or you don’t have any apparent side effects or a doctor recommended it… doesn’t mean it’s 100% safe.

Although leaky gut or intestinal permeability is essentially the new guy in town for conventional docs, some don’t even acknowledge it.

“So here’s a pill to fix things” 👨‍⚕️📝 when it can actually make things worse with prolonged use😡

🍕Acid-reducers: With less stomach acid, you dont digest your food well enough. You absorb less nutrients and larger, undigested food particles damage the gut barrier.

🗓️Oral birth control: You have a whole microbiome called the estroblome that breaks down hormones. Synthetic hormones shut off your natural hormones and give you a fake menstrual cycle. This process disrupts your natural estroblome/microbiome, weakening your gut barrier.

😊☹️ Antidepressants: The majority of your serotonin and dopamine are made in the gut then sent to the brain. Antidepressants often help with symptoms in the beginning but eventually disrupt your gut-brain axis, leading to less natural production of happy brain signals.

🦠Antibiotics: This one is well-recognized 👏🏻 where you’re also killing off good bacteria in your gut along with the infection you’re trying to treat. Antibiotics can throw off your natural microbiome for 6-12 months after one 7-day course.

🤕NSAIDs: Easily bought over-the-counter and easily over-used. They reduce inflammation and pain but actually cause inflammation in the gut when used longterm. Longterm use includes 3-5 times per week, one dose per day everyday, 14+ days, keeping a value sized bottle in your medicine cabinet 😅.

💚These drugs are essential in many cases and you don’t have to avoid them when you absolutely need them. Assess how long you’ve been using them and is it time to take a step back? It is good to be informed of the risks and take action to counter those risks. Focus on holistic gut health practices like eating whole foods, prebiotics aka fiber 🍇🍎🥦🫑, probiotics, breathwork or meditate 5-10 minutes a day, filtered water, and joyful movement 🤸‍♀️💚

Want to know the truth about leaky gut???

We pretty much all have it, have had it, or are going to get it.

“Gut health” is sooooo trendy right now. And I’m glad it is because it’s increasing awareness for us to take better care of ourselves from the inside out.

Things that cause leaky gut 🔎:
〰️Alcohol
〰️Processed foods (additives, dyes, emulsifiers/gums, preservatives)
〰️Pesticides
〰️Gluten
〰️Not chewing food completely
〰️Stress
〰️Lack of sleep
〰️Mineral deficiencies
〰️Imbalance in gut microbiome

There are definitely more things but these are the most common reasons and things we are exposed to on a daily basis we may not even realize could cause this damage.

If you’re going to take away one tidbit from this post… chew your food 🍽️ We usually chew a bite on average 5 times before we swallow. Digestion starts in our mouth and chewing a bite 10-20 times will profoundly change your gut health! This will decrease the particle size, improve digestion, and lower the risk of damage to your gut lining from larger food particles.

It is going to feel weird chewing so long and feel like FOREVER at first, but stick with it 😊 your gut (and body) will thank you 💚

Pro tip: if you want to know whether your fish oil supplement is a good quality, high potency or not… chew it!

A) if it tastes fishy 👍🏻
B) if it tastes rancid or like gross, plain oil 👎🏻

This PA weather leading into Memorial Day doesn’t have anyone thinking of sunscreen 🥶… but I have hope! 😎☀️

Now you have time to sort through your current sunscreen stash and be prepared with safer, cleaner, HEALTH PROMOTING sunscreens.

Our skin is the most absorbent organ on our body. Whatever you put on it will get sucked right in to your body. Especially when your pores are open and you’re sweating and it’s hot out.

By avoiding commercial brand, standard sunscreens, you’re avoiding ingredients that
☀️disrupt your hormones (think male/female s*x, stress, thyroid hormones)
☀️cause you to gain more or hold onto fat
☀️lead to future reproductive damage and decreased fertility
☀️increase risk of cancer despite thinking you’re protecting yourselves from cancer with SPF

If you’re overwhelmed with reading ingredients… just start with a “mineral” sunscreen. Then move towards avoiding most brands you see marketed like 🍌🛶, C0ppert0ne, Hawaiian 🌴, Neutrogen@, and so on.

P.S. I see so many parents use the clean stuff on their kids and throw whatever is left on themselves… but remember to take care of yourself too! You’re the reason you have a family, nurture your future health just like you do for the kids.

It’s like pure energy in a glass. For reals.
🧡
An adrenal cocktail is made up of ingredients to replenish your minerals and fuel your adrenal glands to ensure your body can handle stress and maintain energy levels.
🧡
4oz coconut water (high in potassium)
4oz orange juice (food-based vitamin c)
Hefty pinch to 1/4 lol lol z tsp of sea salt (rich sodium & trace mineral source)
🧡
Remember your body burns through minerals when stressed? The first ones to go are sodium and potassium. If you don’t replenish these minerals, your body starts to use up other minerals instead like magnesium, zinc, and calcium-which we don’t want to happen.
🧡
Your adrenal glands contain the highest concentration of vitamin C stores. These small, triangular organs sit above your kidneys and are responsible for energy levels, making & balancing certain hormones, helping to balance blood sugar, and maintaining mineral levels.
🧡
The main hormone our adrenals are most known for is cortisol, aka the “stress” hormone. Adequate amounts of vitamin c make sure we can produce cortisol. Then there’s a fine balance between sodium, potassium AND vitamin c levels to manage how long cortisol sticks around, preventing excess mineral loss via kidneys, avoiding burnout symptoms and helping with how your body deals with stressful situations.
🧡
Try an adrenal cocktail daily between 10am-3pm to help with that afternoon slump we often get and to not feel so stressed out at the end of the day… you’ll be glad you read this post!

🧡P.S. I add milk or heavy cream to mine to give it an orange creamsicle 🍦taste BUT mostly to balance my blood sugar with a mix of carbs, fats, and protein 🧡

And I could go on, and on, and on… but I’ll just leave it at this for today 🤓 Enjoy!

You read that right! 4-5% of your body weight lost during pregnancy in mineral mass.

We’re not talking muscle, fat, or water weight loss. We’re talking mass from your bones, teeth, and minerals being pulled from every cell in your body to give to your growing baby.

An amount of minerals that cannot be compensated for by your daily prenatal… when you even remember to take it 🙃. An amount of minerals that most of us are not getting on a daily basis anyways.

And then we wonder why we feel SO depleted postpartum?? We’re told it’s “just your hormones” or “it’ll pass as the baby gets older”. We learn to deal with how we feel because it’s just being a mom now right??

And THEENNN… we’re prescribed antidepressants or now need thyroid medication or maybe offered birth control to “fix” a symptom or struggle with new gut/digestive issues. Which all of these prescriptions deplete your body of MORE minerals and nutrients. Or again, you just deal with or ignore how your feeling because you’ve got other humans 👩‍👧‍👦to keep alive.

It’s a viscious cycle that makes me want to scream. I wish women (and doctors) were taught the significance of mineral depletion postpartum and balancing your minerals through
✨Nutrition
✨Supplementation when needed
✨Movement
✨Recognizing and learning how to manage stressors
All to help reduce symptoms like
☑️anxiety
☑️thyroid issues
☑️fatigue
☑️burn out
☑️weight loss concerns
☑️mom rage/losing your cool
☑️insomnia
☑️brain fog
☑️difficulty concentrating
☑️Bloating
☑️Heartburn

Save this post to remind yourself in the future how important mineral balancing is again!
And follow along for more postpartum-mineral connection info 💎

When are we going to realize that it’s not fad diets and trends we need to bring back health? It’s ancestral eating! Eating the way our great-great grandparents ate. Eating the way that surviving tribal cultures still eat.

🥩Use the whole animal
🌱Eat seasonal produce
💎Mineral-rich, nutrient-dense foods
🫧Foods that are fermented or sprouted
❌Nothing processed

Whole. Real. Food.

As a mom, I’m constantly analyzing the food I give my family. And I’ve found that ancestral eating has actually been the simplest and easiest (and least complaints 😂) for our household.

There are no strict rules, no extensive “avoid” lists. And these don’t have to be incorporated every single day.

The one thing you have to ask yourself is, “Would my great-great grandmother have cooked with this? Or was this available for her to eat?

You all know I love to say “food is medicine”. And when these foods can provide you and your family with health and longevity, what more could we ask for? Bon appétit 👩‍🍳
