🥁 Cardio drumming is a fun and low impact way for inpatient rehabilitation patients to add some more movement after their full day of therapy.

The activity combines aspects of traditional drumming with a dance component.

Each week, the Recreational Therapy team at Penn Medicine Rehabilitation, an inpatient rehabilitation unit of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, leads group participants through various movements while using a medicine ball, drumsticks and a base for support. Cardio drumming is great for addressing endurance, coordination and socialization while decreasing stress and anxiety.

Some of the best quotes the Recreational Therapy team has received include, "Great for the heart and soul" and, "The best time I've had since I've been here!"

🏄 It was a beautiful day for a wonderful community event on Aug. 3, as GSPP Rehabilitation volunteers participated in the 2025 Life Rolls On – They Will Surf Again event.

GSPP therapists hailing from a variety of outpatient locations throughout the region joined up with colleagues at Penn Medicine and Penn PM&R resident physicians for “Team Red" to help participants surf safely.

Life Rolls On organizes adaptive sports programs throughout the country for people with disabilities.

We're of Penn Medicine | Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Outpatient Therapy speech-language pathologists Erica Ferraiolo-Shearn and Alyssa Tarantino, who presented at the 2025 Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania (BIAPA) Conference in Lancaster. Erica and Alyssa presented on COVID-19, Traumatic Brain Injury and the Role of Cognitive Therapy. Well done!

July is celebrated annually as Disability Pride Month, marking the momentous signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990.

One in four people in America have at least one disability, according to the CDC. These can range from disabilities impacting self-care, independence and mobility to hearing, vision and cognition.

Happy Disability Pride Month from all of us at GSPP Rehabilitation!

GSPP Rehabilitation and our colleagues at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation co-sponsored the 2025 Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania (BIAPA) Conference in Lancaster. Clinical experts from both organizations attended and also participated in sharing their expertise with attendees.

GSPP's Kelsey Palmer, CTRS, MS, facilitated Adaptive Yoga: Exploring the Breath and Mind.

BIAPA is designed for professionals, survivors, family members, caregivers and volunteers. This year’s annual conference theme focused on “Celebrating an Empowered Brain Injury Community.”
