Our patient came to the Penn Medicine Orthoplastic Limb Salvage Center in February of 2019 with complaints of bilateral calf pain with exertion. She is an avid soccer player with hopes of playing in college, but was debilitated by pain while playing. She previously had bilateral compartment releases at an OSH with no relief in symptoms. After seeing us, she was directed to see our vascular team who discovered blood clots in her legs and performed angioplasty. After several months, her symptoms still persisted and there was concern for popliteal entrapment. She underwent exploration of popliteal artery and arteriolysis , and decompression of common peroneal nerve and posterior tibial nerve on bilateral legs about two months apart.
She is now almost a year and a half from surgery and is feeling great!
β6 surgeries and 6 years later and I am finally feeling like the athlete I used to be. I had severe, exercise induced, bilateral calf pain since the age of 15. I played soccer competitively with hopes to play in college, but after 4 surgeries with no relief I was forced to quit at age 17. At age 19 I had two more surgeries by Dr. Levin that successfully relieved my pain. A year later I have achieved a full recovery and am very thankful and grateful for the opportunity to live my healthiest life.β
We look forward to seeing her continue to improve and are thrilled to see her back to doing the activities she loves.
