Tension in babies doesn’t come out of nowhere. It develops as the body adapts to early stress! From a chiropractic and nervous system perspective, infant tension is often a protective response.
Some common contributors to tension we see include:
🤍 Intrauterine constraint
Limited space in the womb (breech positioning, twins, prolonged positioning, low fluid, uterine shape) can create asymmetry and tension patterns before birth.
🤍 Birth stress or trauma
Fast labors, long labors, inductions, C-sections, forceps or vacuum assistance, cord tension, or strong pushing can place stress on a baby’s head, neck, spine, and nervous system, even when the birth is considered “normal.”
🤍 Oral restrictions (tongue, lip, or cheek ties)
Oral ties don’t just affect feeding, they can create tension through the jaw, neck, shoulders, and body, influencing posture and movement patterns.
🤍 Nervous system overwhelm
When a baby’s nervous system stays in a heightened fight-or-flight state, the body may hold tension as a way to feel safe.
🤍 Digestive or feeding challenges
Reflux, gas, difficulty latching, or inefficient feeding can lead to guarding and increased body tension.
This tension may show up as:
🤍Stiff or arched body
🤍Head turning preference
🤍Tight fists or jaw
🤍Feeding difficulties
🤍Trouble settling or sleeping
🤍Excessive startle reflex
So how does chiropractic care help?
Pediatric chiropractic care is gentle, specific, and focused on the nervous system.
Chiropractic care works to:
✔ Support healthy brain-body communication
✔ Reduce interference along the spine and nervous system
✔ Improve movement patterns and symmetry
✔ Help the nervous system shift out of fight-or-flight and into regulation
When the nervous system feels safe, the body doesn’t need to hold as much tension.
Our goal isn’t to “fix” babies.
It’s to support their ability to adapt, grow, and thrive!
Because babies do best when their bodies can relax, move, and function as they were designed to 🤍
