It’s pear picking time, and we picked 6-gallon and 3-gallon buckets worth of pears today! From flower to fruit, this tree never fails to amaze me. I was told the tree was dead and useless when I bought the property, but I firmly believe in letting nature heal itself.

Next up, making pear sauce, slicing and freezing, and finding a yummy recipe to make.

First harvest of the season- Sage, chamomile flowers, and snap peas!

Sage not only seasons your food, it’s great for bloating and indigestion. Add to hot water as a smoothing tea.

Chamomile is a sleep aide and muscle relaxant. Enjoy a cup of chamomile tea 30 minutes before bed for more restful sleep.

To know your farmer is to appreciate the food they provide — but just as important is to know their farm. The type of farm determines the food produced and is as unique as the people who run it. Here are some popular types of farming operations.

Living on a farm is never boring, and every neighbor I’ve met has pretty much revolved around an animal that got loose- typically my sheep getting through the electric fence. But, today a beautiful peacock showed up on my property, and I met another neighbor.

Went to the Wicked Gluten Free Festival today as a dietitian and someone who lives with Celiac Disease. So many yummy treats and new vendors! I was also very impressed with all the other food allergies they catered to.

Spring has sprung on the farm. We have 25 meat birds chicks, 10 laying hen chicks, 3 ducklings, 2 turkeys, 6 lambs, in addition to our 17 hens and 3 roosters (long story), 4 ewes, and 1 ram. Can’t forget about farm dog, Jack, and our rodent control, Steve and Petunia. It’s busy around here.

Spotlighting walnuts for the Exeter Food Pantry. This nut is high in omega-3 fatty acids, contains fiber, and is considered a healthy fat. They are good for your brain and heart. Below are some great ideas on how to use them:

1. As a snack. A serving size is 14 halves
2. Add as a topper to oatmeal, salads, apple sauce, or ice cream.
3. Include with chicken or tuna salad
4. As a dessert. Place walnuts inside dates, close, drizzle with chocolate, and freeze for 5 minutes. Enjoy!
5. Place in a food processor and blend until a paste. Use as the base for gravy
6. Make tacos using walnuts and black beans as a meat replacement
7. Roast in the oven with maple syrup to make candied walnuts
8. Add to baked goods- bread, cookies, muffins, tarts, and cakes
9. Protein balls- Blends oats, dates, walnuts, coconut flakes, ground flaxseed, and maple syrup. Rolls into balls and refrigerate.
