To all the women who have experienced sexual abuse, i hold sadness that we once again have a president who says “grab em by the pussy”, and says “I’m gonna protect women whether they want it or not”, as though we have no autonomy or ability to think for ourselves.
To all the children of minority races, I grieve that you now have to wonder if your president openly has disdain for you.
To all LGBTQ+ , I hate that you have to worry about your rights being dampened or reversed.
To all the mothers, who aren’t content with accepting that school shootings are “just a fact of life”, especially knowing they really only happen in America.
To all of us, who watched January 6, 2020, and know that we deserve a country where the leader doesn’t openly spur on violence. We deserve a country where an openly racist and sexist leader isn’t able to become president.
But that’s not what we have. And that is simultaneously not okay, and also all the more reason to fight.
I stand with all of you. And we fight together. There is still more good than evil in the world, and today is not the day for apathy. Let us spur on the next 4 years to continue creating a culture and a push for progress. It’s what those before us did, and a fight we can continue. There is still hope for the future.
This Wednesday morning, we remember 8 years ago, and the pain that followed for people in years to come at the hands of a man who cares only for himself and his clout. My oldest daughter was a few months old then. It feels crippling that my youngest now is also a baby, entering into 4 years of a Trump presidency.
We also remember, we are resilient. We fight. And love wins. There are still safe places for you. So today I go downstairs carrying my baby, and open all the blinds to let the light in.
Grieve. And then, when you can, put on some Macklemore, hug your kids, and shine.
