To all the women who have experienced sexual abuse, i hold sadness that we once again have a president who says “grab em by the pussy”, and says “I’m gonna protect women whether they want it or not”, as though we have no autonomy or ability to think for ourselves.

To all the children of minority races, I grieve that you now have to wonder if your president openly has disdain for you.

To all LGBTQ+ , I hate that you have to worry about your rights being dampened or reversed.

To all the mothers, who aren’t content with accepting that school shootings are “just a fact of life”, especially knowing they really only happen in America.

To all of us, who watched January 6, 2020, and know that we deserve a country where the leader doesn’t openly spur on violence. We deserve a country where an openly racist and sexist leader isn’t able to become president.

But that’s not what we have. And that is simultaneously not okay, and also all the more reason to fight.

I stand with all of you. And we fight together. There is still more good than evil in the world, and today is not the day for apathy. Let us spur on the next 4 years to continue creating a culture and a push for progress. It’s what those before us did, and a fight we can continue. There is still hope for the future.

This Wednesday morning, we remember 8 years ago, and the pain that followed for people in years to come at the hands of a man who cares only for himself and his clout. My oldest daughter was a few months old then. It feels crippling that my youngest now is also a baby, entering into 4 years of a Trump presidency.

We also remember, we are resilient. We fight. And love wins. There are still safe places for you. So today I go downstairs carrying my baby, and open all the blinds to let the light in.

Grieve. And then, when you can, put on some Macklemore, hug your kids, and shine.

The weeks have dragged on. Our anxiety has risen. We’re tracking hypotheticals and self-soothing as we trudge through the dread. We’re all wondering what will be through the door, as we walk through it later this week. Will we and our loved ones be met with welcoming arms, as we continue on our journey to empowerment, with ceilings shattering victoriously around us? Or will we find that the voices of hate and racism have again become loud enough to drown out hope and progress? If so, how do we go on? How do we continue walking with our head held high, knowing that hate and evil have a stronghold in our backyards.

We remember that popular vote means something. We remember that small people try to make themselves big by promoting hate. We think on Mr. Roger’s reminder to “look for the helpers” amidst tragedy. Then we become the helpers. We lean on each other and we continue to shine, and take people in, and fight loudly. Because we are strong. Because we are love. Because love wins in the end.

Here’s to hoping and cheering for shattered glass ceilings and a country of progress and inclusivity and unity. It’s about MaDam Time. We deserve to be governed by someone who is truly for the people, not just a select race and gender.

And here’s to knowing that no matter what happens, even in the worst case, all is not lost. The empowerment is just as real as it was last week. Reality is still reality. We will rise and we will create safety, with “Wednesday Morning” by Macklemore playing in the background.
