Penn Medicine Staff Appreciation | Karen Flanigan đź’™

Some nurses go above and beyond for their patients. The rarest ones go above and beyond for everyone.

We are shining a light on one of our own — a nurse whose heart is as big as her dedication. Every year, she takes it upon herself to organize and bring to life every single staff night event, pouring her creativity, energy, and care into making sure her colleagues feel truly seen and celebrated.

The events she creates don't just happen — they last. Our team talks about them for months. They are a reminder to every staff member that their work matters, their sacrifices are noticed, and they are deeply appreciated.

But it doesn't stop there. Each and every day, she shows up for her patients with the same boundless compassion and commitment. She is the definition of what it means to be a nurse — and then some.

We could not do this without you. Thank you Karen for lifting patients AND your team. You are truly irreplaceable.

Wound, Ostomy, and Continence (WOC) Nurse Week (April 12–18)

This week, we proudly celebrate the expertise, compassion, and dedication of our WOC nurses. They are specialists in wound healing, ostomy management, and continence care who make a lasting impact on patient outcomes every day.

Often known as the “pit crew” of healthcare, WOC nurses are advocates, educators, and innovators who go beyond clinical care to empower patients and improve quality of life.

Join us in recognizing and thanking our incredible WOC nurses for their commitment to excellence and the vital role they play in our healthcare community.

At Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) Ambassador Day, nurse leaders from across Pennsylvania came together in Harrisburg to champion policies that grow, protect, and empower the healthcare workforce.

From expanding access to nursing education to prioritizing workplace safety and addressing staffing challenges, this event created a powerful platform for nurses to share their voices with lawmakers.

We’re proud of HUP Nursing and Penn Medicine representatives Joan Campion, Liz Judge, and Julie Jablonski for leading the way. As Liz shared, this experience was “a meaningful chance to ensure our voices are represented” and to advocate for what matters most to both nurses and patients.

These Nurse Leaders spent time meeting with Senator Joe Picozzi, State Representative Bridget Kosierowski, and representatives of Senator Vince Hughes and Senator Carolyn Comitta to advocate for the nonpartisan issues of strengthening Pennsylvania’s healthcare workforce and protecting the health care workforce from violence.

Together, we continue to push for a stronger, safer healthcare workforce across Pennsylvania.

Continuing the momentum from the AANN Neuroscience Nursing Annual Conference ✨

HUP Nursing proudly represented at the Vizient Nursing Programs Conference 2026 in Phoenix, AZ, showcasing the strength and impact of our Vizient/AACN Nurse Residency Program.

We’re especially proud of Jana Leotta, a nurse resident on Rhoads 4, who presented her evidence-based project: Impact of Early Nutrition on Post-Op Complications in Pancreatic Surgery. By combining her clinical nursing perspective with her background as a registered dietitian, Jana explored how early nutritional interventions can improve surgical outcomes — a powerful example of interdisciplinary innovation in practice.

Supported by residency coordinators Sanietra T. Ecckles and Caylee Wolf, this work highlights how nurse residency programs cultivate inquiry, leadership, and real-world impact from day one.

From Dallas to Phoenix, our nurses continue to lead, learn, and elevate patient care on a national stage.
