International Overdose Awareness Day, observed on August 31, is the world’s largest annual campaign focused on ending overdoses. It draws attention to the critical issue of overdose as a significant global public health challenge and brings urgently needed attention to this growing epidemic.
International Overdose Awareness Day pays tribute to those who have lost their lives to overdose, offers support to their families and friends, and underscores a global commitment to preventing overdose and its related harms.

Physician Family Day is celebrated today, honoring physicians and their families. Established in 2018 by the AMA Alliance, it takes place on the final Saturday of August and recognizes those important “behind-the-scenes” contributions that physician families make to health care.

Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (SHAAD) is August 20. Created in 2019 by the Southern AIDS Coalition, SHAAD highlights the higher rates of HIV among people living in the Southern states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. The day offers opportunities for HIV testing, access to medical care, education on prevention, stigma reduction, and additional HIV-related resources.
SHAAD encourages individuals to know their HIV status, connect to care if necessary, and support initiatives to end the HIV epidemic in the South.

National Relaxation Day, observed annually on August 15, encourages individuals to pause and prioritize their well-being. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of removing ourselves from our demanding, fast-paced routines and allocating time for relaxation, rejuvenation, and self-care!

Meet Jesse Telles, LCSW (she/her), Behavioral Health Consultant
Jesse performs a unique role at the Partnership, as a behavioral health consultant in our clinic and on Drexel’s HOPE mobile unit.
In our clinic, she is responsible for assisting patients in achieving their wellness objectives, which may include improving treatment adherence, smoking cessation, managing blood pressure, stress reduction and enhancing mental health. Her role involves conducting trauma-informed assessments, providing brief counseling, offering referrals, and facilitating linkage to resources for individuals experiencing substance use disorders or mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, grief and trauma.
On Drexel’s HOPE mobile unit, Jesse delivers community-based support, utilizing a low-threshold and harm-reduction approach to testing and treatment for HIV, viral hepatitis and substance use disorders. In addition to behavioral health services, she provides case management support for individuals initiating medications, such as Suboxone, as part of their recovery process, and she squeezes in time to oversee our peer specialists.
National Son’s and Daughter’s Day is observed each year on August 11. This family-focused occasion provides parents and guardians an opportunity to pause from their daily routines, spend quality time with their children, and recognize the distinct bonds they share, irrespective of age.

Safe + Sound Week is a national observance held each August to promote the significance of workplace safety programs and to encourage organizations to foster a proactive safety culture. Initiated in 2017 by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), an agency within the U.S. Department of Labor, this event supports the advancement and enforcement of workplace safety standards.
This year, Safe & Sound Week will be observed August 11 to 17. The theme, “Preparedness Is My Superpower,” underscores the importance of emergency preparedness and response while highlighting the achievements of effective workplace health and safety programs.

National Gay Uncle’s Day, or "Guncles Day," is observed on the second Sunday in August to recognize the contributions of gay uncles in U.S. families. Since its inception in 2016, it has gained popularity through social media, celebrating the positive roles gay uncles play with their nieces, nephews and extended family members.
National Gay Uncle’s Day promotes inclusivity and understanding within families and communities, emphasizes the importance of diversity and inclusion, and underscores the various forms that love, and support can take within modern family structures.

National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM), observed throughout the month of August, highlights the significance of receiving timely immunizations throughout all stages of life. The purpose is to encourage well-informed decisions regarding vaccination, emphasize the essential role vaccines play in safeguarding both individuals and communities from preventable diseases, and advocate for equitable access to immunizations for everyone.
This year’s theme, "Don't let history repeat itself. Protect your future. Get immunized," underscores that vaccination extends beyond individual health choices; it represents a collective responsibility to promote the well-being of ourselves, our families, and our communities for future generations.

Meet Carolynn Edwards, MSN (she/her), Clinical Research Nurse
Carolyn Edwards serves as a Clinical Research Nurse at the Partnership, where she provides support throughout all phases of clinical trials. She ensures that both the clinical and administrative components of each trial comply with clinical practice standards, regulatory mandates and ethical requirements, always prioritizing the integrity and success of the research.
In collaboration with principal investigators and Drexel’s Institutional Review Board, Carolyn contributes to contract and budget development, designs source documents, and guarantees strict adherence to study protocols. She oversees the recruitment, retention and education of study participants, providing detailed explanations of each study and its potential side effects. A critical aspect of her position involves meticulous data collection, documentation and reporting on observed study activities.
Functioning as a link between researchers, physicians and other members of the research team, Carolyn plays a central role in facilitating effective communication and promoting the efficient conduct of clinical studies. Click here to learn more about Carolyn: http://bit.ly/45B97z7.

National Health Center Week is observed this year from August 3-9 and promotes awareness of the approximately 1,500 Community Health Centers in the U.S. The week provides an opportunity to showcase the work of community health center employees and supporters, who deliver health care services to more than 32.5 million patients across nearly 16,000 communities each year.
These health centers are essential components of the communities they serve, offering culturally competent services and addressing social determinants of health that impact general well-being. The theme for this year, “Celebrating 60 Years of Progress,” recognizes the contributions of Community Health Centers and reflects a commitment to continued innovation and equity.

Partnership Comprehensive Care Practice provides outreach in the community. Our outreach team partners with an array of community organizations in the Philadelphia area to offer rapid HIV testing and education.
Our team of certified HIV testers and counselors are available to offer free rapid HIV testing at local community organizations, health fairs and special events. Our team uses the fastest point of care test available and is trained to provide pre- and post-test counseling and linkage to care. Our team is available during regular business hours, as well as evenings and weekends.
Additionally, our team leads interactive educational presentations at local agencies, community groups, churches, etc. All presentations are free and cover a variety of topics related to sexual health. Our presentations introduce the basics of HIV, Hepatitis C and PrEP. Our goal is to end stigma through the availability of reliable information and increase access to testing and treatment.
