For Black women, giving birth carries a high risk of death. Advocates are spending a week raising awareness and looking for solutions from Harrisburg.

Cleopatra Robinson, founder and executive director of A Home from Shana Foundation, joined City Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson in early April after the councilmember issued a proclamation recognizing Black Maternal Health Week in the city from Apr. 11 - 17.

I can't stress the importance of having a doula!

Birth is more mental than it is physical. Remember, birth is a marathon. The emotional support is needed!

Doulas are wealthy in knowledge which is 🔑 for advocacy. As well as, physical overall health by educating on issue to look out for during pregnancy and postpartum. 💪🏾

The presence of a doula:

💙 Decrease stress.
🤰🏾 Decrease labor time
💙 Increase spontaneous birth
🤰🏾 Decrease medical intervention
💙 Decrease negative birth experiences

This makes my heart full! This is what keeps me going. This first time momma was very nervous as expected due to fear of the unknown. Once we sat down together to come up with a plan and dispelled those birthing fears, I began to see such confidence. Birth does not have to be a horrible/ traumatic experience. It should be a positive one!

On this day one year ago Open Arms Services became a legal entity!

Having a business has truly been an experience. I thought I had everything planned out. ❌ There were days I've cried, compared myself to others, wanted to quit & told myself I wasn't good enough. Then God stepped in!

Over this pass year I did a lot of networking. Found a phenomenal mentor. God has connected me with a few amazing doula sisters, and birthworkers you guys are simply amazing! 💙

Thank you to the families who trusted me to Serve, Pray, Educate and Love on them in their time of need. And to be apart of their incredible birth story.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose - Romans 8:28
