My phone rang today with the words we've been waiting on for years.

Ethan has a transplant date.

Provided no one gets sick (an easy feat for the middle of December), Ethan will be transplanted on December 27th.

At the same time, I will donate to a stranger, someone somewhere in this country who is similarly in need.

I want to feel only excited. I want to be simply overwhelmed with joy.

But a transplant is a different treatment, not a cure, and it will change everything about our life.

Hopefully for the better.

Further, in the same day, I also learned that they're suspecting his membrane is beginning to fail after years on dialysis.

So, we're potentially down to the wire here and could use all the good juju you can send us.

ETHY AND I ARE ACTIVE IN THE NATIONAL KIDNEY REGISTRY!!!

If you're new here or have missed any previous posts, I was evaluated to donate to Ethan, but I am unable to donate to him directly because despite having overly functional kidneys, my anatomy is wonky.

NKR is a organ database that specializes in making living donation more accessible.

Since I can't donate directly to Ethan, and Ethan has had no other able donor come forward, the NKR ensures that Ethan gets a living donor organ.

Now that we're active in the system, NKR can start matching and cross matching organ donors like me to organ recipients like Ethan, creating a life-saving cross country donation chain.

Having a living donor is incredibly important to a child Ethans age since he's almost definitely going to need multiple transplants during his life.

This registry makes it possible.

Now that we're crossing this threshold, I'm so anxious, incredibly excited and doing my best to look forward towards an uncertain future with hope.

Ethy the overachiever!!!

May 31st during his last bladder measurement, Ethans bladder was holding only 8mls of fluid.

Today he is holding 134mls which is above what the 'typical' bladder of a child his age would hold.

Plus he emptied it completely when he peed and his pressures were low to normal.

This all means that from a urology perspective Ethan is again cleared for transplant!!!

We will continue bladder cycling until then but once he's ready he should be able to have his new kidney transplanted directly into his existing bladder.

On August 15th, Ethan has a size check scheduled to see if he’s big enough to be listed with the NKR or UNOS.

On August 22nd, he has the test to measure bladder capacity and make plans for his bladder in regards to transplant.

At some time in the next few weeks/ months, I will be donating into the NKR to help speed up the process for Ethan and hopefully 🤞🏼 secure him a living donor organ.

However, a directed donor will help the process move along as smoothly and efficiently as possible, and since Ethan will more than likely need a second transplant my donation will not go to waste if a direct donor is found.

There’s no obligation at all to go through with donation at any point of the process, but it truly is a lifesaving gift.

This sweet boy, Ethan Mount, is looking for a kidney donor!

Ethan has O+ blood so a potential direct donor would also need this blood type.

I’m approved to donate into the National Kidney Registry (NKR) which is a registry of living donors who are giving up a kidney for donation to someone who is not a direct recipient.

However, I’m unable to directly donate to Ethan because my anatomy is too complex.

After I donate into this registry, I will get a voucher which is essentially an IOU ticket for one living donor kidney.

This registry is fantastic, but it does NOT guarantee that Ethan won’t remain on this list for years once he goes active.

We’re hoping that Ethan will be active on the list at some point within the next 6 months to a year, but without a direct living donor we could be looking at years more on dialysis for Ethan.

The longer a person is on dialysis, statistically speaking, the lower the length of time the donated kidney will last post transplant.

Since, Ethan has already been on dialysis for 2 and a half years we want to get him transplanted as soon as possible.
