A “mateada” is casually defined as a meeting up of people to drink yerba mate together. It is at the core of many yerba mate cultures and I’d love to share it with our local community.

Yerba mate at the Union!

I had the chance to grab a quick pic with some of the yerba-loving players while dropping off supplies at the training facility.

Thank you to Coach Carnell also. He saw my Yerba Crew t-shirt and said, "Ah, the yerba mate guy," and grabbed the guys for me.

Why an air gap?

A mateada is a social gathering centered around drinking yerba mate. It usually involves a group of people sharing mate from a common gourd using a bombilla (metal straw), often passing it around in a circle. In the US, we mostly drink from our own gourds at the mateada.

What you'll usually see at a mateada:

Community-focused: It’s about connection. Friends, family, and strangers come together to talk, relax, and share time together.

Casual and open: There's no strict structure; it can happen in a park, at home, after sports, or at an event.

Cultural tradition: Rooted in countries like Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and parts of Brazil, it’s a key part of daily life.

At Yerba Crew, when we host a mateada, we’re creating a space to connect with the local Philadelphia community and introduce people to mate culture in an inclusive, friendly way, whether it’s their first sip or their hundredth.
