The Fourth Annual Berton and Sallie Korman Family Prize was awarded on November 11, 2024 at Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital. Bert and Sallie recognized that our staff are the living embodiment of our mission, and they are the ones who make it come to life. To honor the incredible staff at Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital, the Korman family awards $20,000 to two staff members, nominated by their peers, who best represent the qualities found in Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital’s five pillars: Quality, Service, Academics, Diversity & Inclusion, and People.

This year, the Berton and Sallie Korman Family Prize was awarded to Jill Ranochak and Christine Gorrell from the Medical Oncology Department for their dedication and willingness to go above and beyond for our patients, staff, and community.

Jill is known for creating a unique culture that promotes teamwork, patient care, and patient safety. As the Ambulatory Nurse Manager, Jill implemented a new program that utilizes palliative care and patient transition to create a continuity of care from the inpatient transition to symptom management for our clinic patients in the outpatient setting. Congratulations, Jill and thank you for all that you do!

Chris serves as the Administrator for the Oncology Service line and is a valued member of the leadership team. Chris works hard for her department and goes above and beyond to organize things like the Walk & 5K Run Through the Park, Survivors Day, Lung Screening Symposiums, and other outreach programs in the community. Congratulations, Chris and on behalf of everyone in the community, we are lucky to have you as part of our team!

This Veterans Day, we honor Michael Goldberg, DO, Chair of the Division of Gastroenterology, part of the Department of Digestive Disease and Transplantation at Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital, and all veterans for their service to our country and their continued commitment to helping others. We asked Dr. Goldberg how his military career shaped his path in medicine.

Q: How has your military experience/service shaped your healthcare career?

A: My military experience has shaped my healthcare career in several ways, but the most impactful is the aspect of a team approach. Every part of the team is essential to get the intended results in the military and this is applicable to care teams for patients. Outcomes are frequently improved when taking a multidisciplinary approach.

Q: What was your role and branch in the military, and when and for how long did you serve?

A: I completed my military service in 2017 after 11 years of active-duty service in the US Army. I completed my military career at the rank of Major. I was stationed in: Honolulu, HI, Bethesda, MD, and El Paso, TX. I had the opportunity to work at the Landstuhl Military Hospital in Germany and at the Kericho District Hospital in Kenya during my service. I was deployed to Afghanistan as the Brigade Surgeon for the 45th Sustainment Brigade in support of OEF in 2009/2010.

Q: What specific skills or values from your military service do you apply in your daily work as a healthcare professional?

A: Communication and organization. Be ensuring adequate communication and specifically closed loop communication during procedures we ensure the best and safest patient care we can deliver.

Q: Can you share a memorable experience from your military service that influences how you approach patient care today?

A: While working with patients in the Kericho District Hospital in Kenya, any radiologic studies could take days to weeks, so we had to rely on our physical exam skills. Also, while transporting a patient in a CCAT (critical care air transport), you are unable to hear anything over the sounds of the plane, again having to alter my physical exam to get the information needed. This has taught me to hone and perfect my physical skills and is something I frequently reference when speaking with trainees in regards to the importance of physical exam skills when caring for patients.
