Spring! Yes, it is coming even if winter insists on making a long goodbye. Are you finding yourself connecting with the natural world? Seeing the daffodils popping up from the earth, catching a fresh scent of blossoms as you walk down the street, looking for its source? I have a favorite little spot across from one of my favorite coffee shops where I try to go most mornings and sit to watch the changes taking place in the garden plots. Even here in the city center of Philadelphia, I can experience the wonder of the natural world.
“In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous.” – Aristotle
And that includes our bodies! Our bodies are made up of the material world. In yoga and Ayurveda (the sister science to yoga), we recognize 5 elements of nature – earth, water, fire, air and ether (space) -as the building blocks for everything in the material world, including our bodies. Our bodies are all uniquely some combination of these 5 elements. These elements also show up in the seasons. Spring is the season of earth and water. The ground is thawing, moist, heavy – fertile ground to support the growth of new flowers and plants. The air is growing humid. Spring showers move through. You can feel the wetness, heaviness, but also the lifting energy of spring. It is important to move the body, keep the energy lifting up, especially this time of year.
Tomorrow, we begin our week’s journey together, with reverence for nature, earth and our bodies. Nature has so much to teach us. In our busy lives, getting lost in technology and clicks, we forget our connection to nature.
Shakespeare reminds us of the wisdom that can be gleaned from a walk in the woods –
“And this our life, exempt from public haunt,
Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks,
Sermons in stone, and good in everything.” (As You Like It, Act II, Scene 1)
