The Penn Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine (Penn Rehab) is an inpatient rehabilitation unit of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and managed by Good Shepherd Penn Partners. March is Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness Month. MS affects the communication between the brain and body, leading to symptoms like fatigue, muscle weakness, vision issues and balance challenges. While there is no cure, advancements in treatments and rehabilitation have made it possible to better manage the disease and improve quality of life for those living with MS. Targeted rehabilitation, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy, can help alleviate these symptoms and improve overall well-being.

During the Winter Olympics, GSPP's Penn Medicine Rehabilitation team at Rittenhouse held a friendly, creative competition, with Team Peru taking home Gold! 🥇
In addition to employee competition, the team organized a patient Olympics, which had a profound impact on the patient athletes who participated. Patients cheered each other on and played fairly. Therapists adapted games to make it an all-inclusive event.
Huge round of applause to committee members for putting in the hard work to referee games and serving as the brains behind the activities. 👏

A special Thank you to three student members of the Technology Student Association (TSA) at Welsh Valley Middle School who came to GSPP's Rittenhouse location for the next important step in their community service project.
To help improve literacy in their community, the students organized a book drive at their school, rallying classmates, teachers and families around a shared goal. Their efforts resulted in the collection of more than 3,000 books for BookSmiles, a non-profit organization that distributes books to promote childhood literacy.
But that was only the first step. The students next set their sights on installing a Little Free Library to further improve access to books for everyone in our community.
That’s where partnership made the difference.
GSPP Rehabilitation's Facilities team, led by Associate Hospital Executive Director Derrick Campbell, stepped in to design and construct a permanent Little Free Library outside Rittenhouse, 1800 Lombard Street. When the students visited in February, they worked alongside our team to paint and personalize the structure. It transformed into a welcoming, vibrant space where neighbors can take a book, leave a book and share the joy of reading.
The library now stands outside our building at 18th and South Street and serves as more than a wooden structure. It represents student leadership, community collaboration and the meaningful impact we can make when we work together.
It’s a reminder that improving the health of our community goes beyond our walls and that sometimes, it starts with something as simple and powerful as a book.

Christina Pettet, PT, DPT, NCS, a physical therapist at Penn Medicine | Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Outpatient Therapy's Radnor location, is the first to be recognized through GSPP's new Scholarly Spotlight.
At the 2025 Scottsdale Headache Symposium, Christina, as returning presenter, helped clinicians strengthen an often-overlooked component of headache care: the physical examination. Her session, “A Master Class in Physical Exam Skills for the Headache Provider: Evaluating Co-Occurring Conditions,” brought together providers from multiple disciplines for a practical, hands-on exploration of assessment techniques.
The session's goal was simple and impactful: to help headache providers better identify when musculoskeletal factors may be contributing to symptoms and recognize when physical therapy should be part of a comprehensive care plan.
Through her continued scholarly engagement, Christina’s work supports more comprehensive evaluations and, ultimately, better outcomes for patients.
“I hope it encourages multidisciplinary thinking and expands how we approach headache care,” Christina said.
Her simple advice to colleagues considering scholarly work?
“Just sign up and keep practicing,” she said.

Patients at Good Shepherd Penn Partners Specialty Hospital (LTACH) and Penn Medicine Rehabilitation, a unit of the Hospital of the University of Penn (HUP) located at Rittenhouse, can have two healthy (i.e. no fever or other signs of illness) visitors (aged 12 or over) at a time. Patients may have up to two family caregivers present for family meetings and goals of care/end of life discussions.
At this time, patients with COVID-19 may not have in person visitors. Accommodations will be made for virtual visitation. Exceptions will be permitted for patients with special circumstances (such as long length of stay) and for patients at end-of life. Approved visitors will receive information about risk of infection and will be asked to put on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (gown, gloves, medical mask, and eye protection/face shield). Unit staff will show you how to put on/remove PPE to ensure your safety and reduce the risk of viral spread to others.
