Change reminds us that nothing stays exactly the same forever. Life is always shifting… feelings, relationships, people, situations.

Sometimes that feels comforting, as it’s a reminder that hard moments won’t last forever. Other times, it can feel unsettling, especially when we wish things would stay the same.

What we can try to aim for is flexibility. The more we can accept and adapt to change, the less stuck or resistant we’ll feel when life inevitably moves in a new direction. If we can expect change, instead of fearing it, it might feel a little less overwhelming.

It’s common to misinterpret emotions as facts, especially when anxiety is involved. We can easily mistake anxious thoughts as intuitive warnings.

⚠️ Remember, just because you feel something strongly doesn’t mean it’s true or predictive of what’s to come.

Anxiety creates fear-based thoughts that feel real, making it hard to “trust your gut” because your gut might be reacting to fear. Learning to recognize the difference takes practice, but with time, you can approach and respond to your anxious thoughts in a new way.

We often associate the feeling of anxiety with something ‘bad’ about to happen. And while anxiety does have a protective purpose—to prepare us for potential threats—it isn’t always accurate. Sometimes, it’s a signal of something else.

Metaphors like the one here are common in ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy), a therapy designed to help individuals develop flexibility in their thinking.

Goals of this therapy also include the ability to adapt, cultivate present-moment awareness, and act in accordance with one’s values, even in the presence of difficult or unwanted thoughts and emotions.

We cannot eliminate or avoid negative experiences altogether, and when we try to, it only increases our suttering. However, we can learn to skillfully respond to these experiences.

speaks about this concept in terms of grief, but this can be applied to many other situations. Anger can function as a defense mechanism that protects us from experiencing deeper emotional pain. When someone feels hurt, dismissed, or exposed, anger may arise as a way to shield vulnerable emotions. It can often feel “easier” to display anger than to confront the underlying sadness or fear.

Some examples:

Someone who feels ignored or undervalued in a relationship might respond with anger instead of expressing their desire for closeness.

Anger in response to criticism might stem from feelings of inadequacy or failure.

Anger after losing a loved one might stem from the pain of helplessness or sadness, showing up as blame toward others or frustration with the situation.

When we recognize that anger is often a secondary emotion—arising in response to deeper feelings—we can develop greater self-awareness and work toward healthier ways of expressing our emotions.
