Spinal Cord Injury incidence increases by 18,000 new cases per year. What does this mean? Through increased access to care we can improve quality of life in AT LEAST 18,000 people annually. This art depicts a combination of our scoring sheets, methods, participants, raters, and images of our remote processes used to do just that: increase access to health care, impact lives, and change the world. This collage of research is laid upon an MRI of this researchers/artists brain to show how research is truly within the heart and mind of those who work within.

Why do we need remote assessments?

The successful validation of remote assessments can allow people with SCI that live far from research centers or SCI Model Systems to engage with research, locally and globally. The videoconferencing technology that has become ubiquitous and expanded opportunities for employment, socialization, and telemedicine for people with SCI, can be leveraged for research. Longitudinal assessments over time for physical function can benefit people with SCI for ongoing rehabilitation care if the assessments could be done remotely. It could also enable SCI Model Systems to partner with local clinics to capture high-quality data from people living in rural communities without placing the burden of data collection on individual clinics and providers. Further, people with SCI and their care partners can benefit from having the choice to be able to do in-person or remote assessments, granting them the flexibility, ease of access, and reduced travel burden.

The Center for Outcomes and Measurement at Thomas Jefferson University is completing a research study to evaluate how trained coaches conduct sessions called Coaching in Context (CIC). We are looking to determine if principles of coaching are followed during a CIC session, this is called fidelity. Coaching in Context uses conversations with clients to work towards creating solutions to challenges that interfere with activities that clients desire to do, need to do, or are expected to do. The goal of coaching is for clients to figure out what strategies they feel best meet their needs to overcome these challenges, versus the coach directly providing ideas. Coaching has been shown to be highly effective for individuals with and caregivers of individuals with other chronic conditions. If you are interested, then you would receive up to 10 coaching sessions (free of charge) that would last approximately 30-45 minutes long. As part of the study, you would also meet with the study coordinator before starting coaching and after coaching is completed to answer questionnaires about your well-being.
