(As President Trump’s anti-DEl agenda expands to cultural institutions, the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is at the center of attention.

Kevin Young, the museum’s director and a celebrated poet and essayist, has been on personal leave since March 14, with no public explanation and no clear return date. His absence comes just two weeks before Trump issued an executive order aimed at eliminating
“divisive” ideologies within the Smithsonian - specifically calling out NMAAHC for allegedly promoting values like “hard work” and “the nuclear family” as part of “White culture.”
While there’s been no official link between Young’s leave and the order, the timing is notable.

In response, Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch reaffirmed the institution’s mission: “We will continue to tell the multi-faceted stories of this country’s extraordinary heritage,” he said in a message to staff.
Shanita Brackett, NMAAHC’s associate director of operations, is now serving as interim director. The museum has not issued public comment on Young’s status.
