We do not see patients under the age of 18. Simply put, functional medicine is the future of health care. Many traditional health care providers treat the symptoms of an illness, usually with pharmaceuticals. Disease is often treated as something pre-ordained, a result of genetics or environment. No attempt is made to find a root cause of a problem nor do most physicians consider more nuanced heal

th care practices like diet and lifestyle management. As Dr. Mark Hyman, the president of the Institute for Functional Medicine, noted, this country doesn’t “have a healthcare system. We have a disease management system.”

Functional medicine involves understanding the origins of chronic disease, in the hopes of preventing its onset. If that’s not possible, doctors who practice functional medicine seek more thorough and innovative ways to treat complex disease.

If I live to the average age of a woman in the US. I may only have 25 summers left to enjoy. This hits me hard. I moved to an area 20 minutes from the beach 4 years ago but wasted so many weekends and free time worrying about my business. I was starting from scratch in a new state where nobody knew who I was. I thought if I just stayed vigilant and put in the “work” during my free time - even if it was inefficient useless stuff that wasn’t scaling my practice- that somehow it was going to make me successful.
I was wrong. It’s hard creating boundaries when you are an entrepreneur, but if you don’t, you will burn out which is what happened to me.
I’m focusing on being present this summer and giving my brain body and spirit the downtime it deserves. I hope you are too🌈🌞

Hi there! I’m Dr. Heather Moday, a former Integrative and Functional Medicine doctor turned midlife health advocate. Burnout is not the same as stress. It can be the result of chronic stress from multiple sources that causes a sense of loss of control and loss of hope. It manifests physically and mentally emotionally and spiritually. It’s not just your job or work stress although that can be a big part. It can be from relationships, caregiving, loss, trauma, family, chronic pain, illness, lack of purpose, spiritual depletion, lack of self compassion, perfectionism, fear for the 🌎 and humanity and many more. The good thing is once you can identify the roots. You can start to heal.❤️‍🩹

🔥 Burnout is an end result of multiple stressors and not just work challenges. It can come from romantic relationships, parenting, caregiving, your relationship with yourself and your higher being/or lack of. Physical stressors, addictions, doing too much, over giving, lack of boundaries, perfectionism, lack of self compassion, illness, worry about the future of the world environment and humanity. The list is long and everyone’s story is different. It’s not just stress. It’s the end result of chronic stress.
But once you have identified the roots of your personal story you can heal.

After more than a decade of working with thousands of patients in functional medicine, I’ve noticed clear patterns.

Some people make real progress—deep, lasting healing.
Others stay stuck, bouncing from protocol to protocol, frustrated and exhausted.

The difference?
It’s not about having the “perfect” supplement plan or doing every trendy thing.

It’s about mindset. Boundaries. Self-responsibility.
It’s about doing the real work—even when it’s uncomfortable.

Healing takes time.
You can’t rush it, hack it, or outsource it.
But you can create the conditions that allow your body to shift.
None of us are perfect- we stumble, fall, and get back up. It’s just part of the process.

What has helped you heal in the past? Let me know if any of these resonate with you?

It’s still fits!!!
Almost 14 years ago when I was on the cusp of 40 I completed an Ironman Triathlon in Lake Placid NY.
I am not a person who keeps “stuff”, I don’t like clutter and I’m not attached to “things” generally from my past. I tend to downplay my accomplishments and in fact I’ve worked really hard to overcome Imposter syndrome and self doubt over the years.
Most of the races I’ve done over the past 25 years, I’ve usually thrown away the finisher metals, race bibs and even the t shirts.
Not this race though.
I trained for this race for a year right before I started my Integrative Medicine fellowship. I was all in- I joined a Triathlon club, got a coach, did group rides at 5:30 am and attended swim workshops. I did multiple half Ironmans, Olympic and sprint distance races to prepare for this one. It was a bucket list race and the only Ironman race I did. I only wanted to do one. It was amazing.
I found the jacket from that race hidden in the back of a closet, forgotten, and tried it on. Miraculously it still fit. I am a different person than I was in 2011 but now I am more proud of the work I put into doing this. It was effing hard and I busted my butt to do this race. But now at 55, instead of downplaying this accomplishment, I am letting my 40 year old self know that she was - and is still a BADASS 🧍‍♀️ woman! And I have so much more to do!
What part of your past of current self are you not celebrating?

This has been the story of my life, I just didn’t realize it for so long.
I’ve been a physician for over 25 years and despite switching from conventional care to integrative and functional medicine I still felt burnt out and stressed.
What I realized is that I changed my field and focus to something I was passionate about but I didn’t change how I did it.
I love helping people live their best life but there are many ways to do that!
I realized that direct patient care is not aligned with my energy. As an empath it exhausted me. The energy exchange even when I got positive feedback still left me anxious and depleted. I couldn’t figure it out for years!
After I wrote a book and started speaking to larger groups, consulting, doing podcasts, researching and collaborating, I realized that THIS is what lights me up. This is where I shine.
✨ Sometimes it takes until midlife to figure things out.
I know I am on the right path for me now.
I’m still learning and using my intuition moving forward instead of trying to fit myself into a box that never really worked for me.
🙋‍♀️ Anyone else feeling these vibes these days?

“Did you know that London cab drivers are less likely to develop dementia because they’ve trained their brains through years of navigating the city without GPS? 🚕💡 It’s all about keeping your hippocampus active and engaging your brain in real-world navigation. Being an 80s kid I grew up getting lost and pulling out the maps. I rely on GPS like everyone else now but these studies are changing my mind. Try it for yourself—ditch the GPS sometimes and amulet your brain do the work 🧠✨ 🧠

No. I have not left to become a sheep 🐑 farmer in 🇮🇪 Ireland. But I needed a break to disconnect with the world and re-connect with myself and nature.
After the whirlwind of closing my 10 year old online medical practice, (More on that later!), the election season, and the preparation for presenting at an international health conference- I simply needed a “pause”.
As an integrative physician I always talk about unplugging from social media, news and the constant pull to create and be productive. It’s hard because we all get the message that you have to constantly be “doing”
I’m also at a time in my midlife when I am leaning more into my intuition and listening less to the constant buzz of distraction. Certain things just don’t matter so much anymore.
I found stillness in the quiet Irish countryside where life just moves a little slower. The rawness and quiet beauty of November was welcome.
This trip reminded me of the power of simplicity and presence, less processed food, more exposure to natural elements, more conversations in person, less screens and maybe in my future some more open water swimming. (I will wait till it warms up)
There are so many ways we can all make small changes in our lives to connect with our friends families and environment. To live more intentionally. To let our lives just drift away. What are yours?

People close to me know that I am an oyster aficionado! Although we have amazing oysters back in Virginia, I had to try the delicious wild Atlantic oysters here in western Ireland.🇮🇪
I am getting my daily dose of zinc as well which is so important to immune health, skin and brain health.
One 3 ounce oyster contains about 70 mg of zinc which is 500% of the RDA. They also contains whooping 7-9 grams of protein and they are low in fat as well.
Plus they are delicious. I know they are not everyone cup of tea but I love them.

The best perks of traveling to speak at events are the privilege to learn from other speakers and the generosity and kindness of the organizers and speakers.
This keeps me curious incredibly motivated to keep learning.
between psychoneuroimmunology, environmental resilience and nutrigenomics, I am all fired up. What a great conference
