Happy Mother’s Day from Byrd Cancer Foundation 🌸

Today, we honor the women who have faced cancer while still showing up as mothers, caregivers, partners, daughters, friends, and sources of strength for those around them.

Cancer can change so much. It can change routines, bodies, energy, and even the way someone sees themselves. But it does not take away the love, courage, and determination that so many women carry every single day.

Today, we are thinking of:
The mothers currently in treatment.
The survivors learning to live beyond diagnosis.
The women navigating loss.
The caregivers carrying the weight quietly.
The women who continue to choose hope in the middle of uncertainty.

At Byrd Cancer Foundation, we know that behind every diagnosis is a person, a family, and a story that deserves compassion, support, and care.

To every woman impacted by cancer in any way, we see your strength and honor your journey today.

Happy Mother’s Day 💗

May 8 is World Ovarian Cancer Day.

Ovarian cancer is often called the “silent disease” because its symptoms can be subtle, easily dismissed, or mistaken for other conditions. Bloating, pelvic pain, difficulty eating, and frequent urination are symptoms that should never be ignored when they persist.

Every year, thousands of women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, many at later stages when treatment becomes more difficult. Early awareness and listening to your body can save lives.

This day is about honoring those impacted, raising awareness, advocating for research, and pushing for better access to early detection and quality care.

At Byrd Cancer Foundation, we believe education and awareness are powerful tools in closing the gaps in women’s health and cancer care within our communities.

May is Women’s Health Month.

Women’s health is more than annual checkups. It is access, education, and the ability to be heard and taken seriously at every stage of life.

Too often, women face delays in diagnosis, gaps in care, and disparities that directly impact outcomes. In the United States, Black women are nearly three times more likely to die from pregnancy related causes than white women. Many cancers that affect women, including breast and cervical cancer, have significantly higher survival rates when detected early, yet access to screenings is not equal across communities.

Health should never be determined by zip code, income, or race.

This month is a reminder to prioritize your health, schedule your screenings, ask questions, and advocate for yourself and your loved ones.

At Byrd Cancer Foundation, we remain committed to education, advocacy, and expanding access to care for women in our communities.

May is Bladder Cancer Awareness Month.

Bladder cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the United States, with more than 80,000 new cases diagnosed each year. It is also one of the most recurrent cancers, with many patients facing ongoing monitoring and treatment long after diagnosis.

The signs are often overlooked. Blood in the urine, frequent urination, and pain can be easy to dismiss, but they should never be ignored.

Behind every statistic is someone navigating uncertainty, treatment, and the emotional weight that comes with it.

Early detection matters. Awareness matters. Access to care matters.

At Byrd Cancer Foundation, we are committed to increasing education, advocating for equitable care, and making sure our communities are informed, seen, and supported.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, with more than 5 million cases diagnosed each year. Melanoma, while less common, is the most serious form and is responsible for the majority of skin cancer deaths. This year alone, nearly 100,000 new melanoma cases will be diagnosed, and more than 8,000 lives will be lost.

Behind every number is a person, a family, and a story that deserves more time. The truth is, many skin cancers are preventable and highly treatable when caught early. A simple skin check can make the difference between early detection and a life altering diagnosis.

Pay attention to changes in your skin. Protect yourself from prolonged sun exposure. Make time for regular screenings.

At Byrd Cancer Foundation, we believe awareness must lead to action. Education, access, and early detection are critical to saving lives and closing the gaps in care within our communities.

Brain cancer does not get talked about enough and that silence has real consequences.

May is Brain Cancer Awareness Month, a time to bring visibility to those living with brain tumors, honor the lives impacted, and push for more research, better treatments, and equitable access to care.

At Byrd Cancer Foundation, we believe awareness is more than a moment. It is a commitment to education, advocacy, and showing up for our communities in meaningful ways.

In February, our President, Dr. Nia Bailey had the pleasure of attending the RISE UP for Breast Cancer and Women’s Health Conference. Here’s a brief summary of what we took away from this monumental event.

Hosted by researchers at UCSF, RISE UP is an interdisciplinary conference focused on rethinking how we approach breast cancer prevention, early detection, and women’s health. It brings together clinicians, scientists, advocates, and innovators to explore new strategies that can reduce breast cancer incidence and improve outcomes across a woman’s lifespan.

Throughout the conference, there was a clear shift in focus from treatment to prevention. Conversations centered on early risk identification, personalized care, advancements in technology, and the role of hormones, lifestyle, and access to care in shaping outcomes. The goal is not only to improve treatment, but to intervene earlier and prevent cancer before it develops.

Equally important were discussions around equity, access, and representation. Ensuring that communities of color are included in research, clinical trials, and leadership roles remains critical to creating solutions that work for everyone.

We’re grateful to be part of spaces like this that are pushing the conversation forward and challenging traditional approaches to women’s health and cancer care.

Thank you to the RISE UP team for the invitation and for creating a space that centers innovation, collaboration, and community.
