We gathered.
We connected.
We made space.

Our Sistas & Stories: Enrollment Lunch for Black Women’s Health was everything we hoped it would be — intentional, honest, and rooted in community. 💜🖤

Black women from across Philadelphia came together to share stories, laughter, and real conversations about wellness, care, and the importance of our voices being included in research that shapes our future.

This wasn’t just a lunch.
It was a reminder that when Black women are given safe spaces to show up as we are, powerful things happen.

We’re deeply grateful to every woman who attended, trusted the space, and leaned into the conversation. Your presence matters more than you know.

And this is only the beginning.

At Byrd Cancer Education & Advocacy Foundation, we honor Black History Month and recognize Cancer Risk Reduction Month — because education, honesty, and access save lives.

As our President Dr. Nia Imani Bailey reminds us, we’re shifting the language from prevention to risk reduction.
Why? Because we believe in being truthful with our community. You can do everything “right” and still face a diagnosis — but there are steps that can lower your risk.

Remember B.R.E.N.D.A. 💜
B – Breastfeed (about a year if possible)
R – Reduce sugar & alcohol
E – Exercise daily + eat nutritious foods
N – No smoking or va**ng
D – Develop/maintain a healthy weight
A – Advocate for your health & screenings

Inspired by community leaders and partners like Dr. Monique Gary and the work happening through the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center Research Institute, we’re committed to sharing tools that empower our families with knowledge — not fear.

Because we are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers.
Because our communities deserve to live long, healthy, thriving lives.

We’re incredibly grateful to the students of Friends Select School — Ifeoluwa, Tendayi, Jyena, and Leia — and their teacher Jason for welcoming Byrd Cancer Education & Advocacy Foundation to speak during their annual Social Justice Week.

Spaces like this remind us why our work matters.

Dr. Bailey had the opportunity to present “Breast Health, Equity & Advocacy: Why Black Women’s Health Is a Social Justice Issue,” connecting breast health to justice, access, and equity — and showing students how advocacy and healthcare intersect in real, life-saving ways.

These students are engaging deeply with critical conversations around racial ambiguity, colorism, misogynoir, the school-to-prison pipeline, Pan-Africanism, and the evolving story of Black identity. Their thoughtfulness, courage, and leadership give us so much hope for the future.

We also shared resources from our partners to support families and educators, because education and prevention start early — and it truly takes a village.

At Byrd, we believe health equity is social justice. And when young people are informed, empowered, and seen, whole communities grow stronger.

To these students: thank you for your brilliance, your questions, and your voices. We’re proud of you. Keep leading. 💜

When Black women are supported, the whole community shows up.
S/O to this amazing gentleman for grabbing a flyer for his wife because her voice matters too. That’s how change starts — one conversation, one family, one community at a time.
