👶✨ Born via C-section? Here’s what you should know about a baby's gut health!

Did you know that HOW your baby is born shapes their gut microbiome — and that impacts their health for years?

🌀 Natural Birth:
Baby passes through the birth canal and inherits mom’s microbiome — Maternal microbiome—gut and v/ginal—play a far bigger role and should be tested and optimized before delivery (PMID: 35590163).
—This is crucial for gut development, immune balance, and even brain health.

🧼 C-Section Birth:
Baby skips the birth canal and instead picks up skin and hospital microbes. This can lead to:
—Less diverse gut flora (PMID: 20566857)
—More gas, colic, and constipation
—Microbial imbalances until solid food introduction

📣 What We Know:
Decreased Lactobacillus & Bifidobacterium in early infancy is associated with a greater risk of the following at 5 years old (PMID: 36705040, PMID: 19220322)
-- asthma
-- allergies
-- childhood obesity

Note From Me:

C-sections can be life-saving and unavoidable. This isn’t about shame — it’s about informed choices and reducing elective C-sections when not medically needed.

✨ If a C-Section is required— here’s how to support baby’s microbiome:

➤➤ Ask about V/ginal Seeding: A swab of mom’s vaginal microbes applied to baby’s face/mouth post-birth. May temporarily nudge microbiome closer to vaginal-born. Long-term health benefits remain unproven (PMID: 35590163). In a study of 60 babies, no adverse events were reported (PMID: 36334724).
➤Skin-to-skin contact: Baby gets essential microbes from mom’s chest and skin
➤Breastfeeding: Provides prebiotics and living probiotics to support microbiome growth
➤Environmental exposure: Dirt, animals, whole foods — yes, nature helps!
➤ Infant Probiotics: See previous post Colicky Baby to see recommended brands.
➤ Avoid unnecessary antibiotics: Ex: mom OPT out of eye ointment routinely given to all newborns at birth

Would you try microbiome seeding?

🚫 Not all “feminine washes” are created equal.

Let’s get real — some of those popular washes for down there might be doing more harm than good. 👀

They often contain:
🧪 Detergents that strip away not only dirt but also the natural oils and protective bacteria on the skin and mucosal surfaces. This alters the feminine microbiome, making it harder for beneficial Lactobacilli to thrive.

🧪 Glycerin, Propylene Glycol: while moisturizing, these can alter osmotic balance, increasing feeding yeast overgrowth

🧪 Sodium Benzoate, Disodium EDTA: These prevent microbial growth and destroy protective lactobacillus

🧪 Endocrine disruptors ex Fragrances, can mimic estrogen

🧪 Parabens aka preservatives are antimicrobials that destroy protective lactobacillus

Yes, even if it’s “for external use only,” some of it can make its way inside.

These products create a cycle of dependency.
Many use Vagisil to address odor or discomfort, but the product itself may contribute to the very imbalance it's marketed to fix — causing a cycle of chronic irritation.

✨ The better option?
✅ Use products that are pH balanced, free from parabens, preservatives, and synthetic fragrances —external only, never inside!

✨If you suffer from odor, work on gut health then liver health.
✅ Support a healthy microbiome—eat probiotic-rich foods (yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut).
✅ Take probiotic oral supplements and probiotic feminine suppositories
✅ Avoid processed foods and refined sugars.

👶 Colicky Baby? The Gut Hack Every Parent Needs! 🍼

We know parenting gets tough, especially when your little one is dealing with colic or digestive discomfort. It can feel overwhelming, but there’s good news!

Infant probiotics can help ease the pain and bring more smiles:

📊 A systematic review (PMID: 28856907) of over 20 studies showed that probiotic supplementation in infants lead to:
– Less colic
– Reduced irritability
– Fewer diarrhea episodes
– Fewer spit-ups
– Fewer respiratory infections
If eczema is a concern, a study of 17 trials with 4,755 children showed that probiotics can reduce eczema in infants (PMID: 26198702).

🍀 Starting Probiotics:
Choose the Right Probiotic: Opt for baby-specific probiotics in liquid or powder form with proper dosing.

Introduce Slowly: Begin with a quarter of the recommended dose, gradually increasing as you monitor your baby's reaction.

🌸 Dosing Tip for Parents:
Mix probiotics with breast milk or formula. Or apply powder to your fingertip and place it in your baby’s mouth during feeding.
Consistency is key, give daily for up to 3 months before assessing benefits.

👶 My top 3 product picks:
– ProbioMed Infant powder (contains dairy)
– Smidge Infant powder
– 1/8 capsule of MegaSporeBiotic
Each one offers different probiotic strains. Rotating these gives the gut a well-rounded boost.

My daughter has been taking these since birth—she’s 15 months now (at time of this posting)!

Menopausal and Feeling Off "Down There"? Here's What No One Tells You 💥

When estrogen drops (hello, menopause!), it doesn't just mess with your mood—it totally shifts your lady part microbiome, leading to dryness, thin cells, irritation, or infections.

🤨 What’s happening?

→ Less estrogen = ↓ glycogen = ↓ good bacteria = ↑ dryness & infections
→ ↑ pH & ↑microbial diversity = ↑ discomfort
→ ↓ cell turnover = thinner, fragile tissue
→ Topical gels that only ↓ pH don’t help microbiome much

🚨 As your good bacteria go down, and the not-so-good ones can take over.

WHAT ACTUALLY FIXES THIS?👇

🧪 2022 study (PMID: 35353163) tested 3 topical treatments on postmenopausal women with dryness:
—Hyaluronic acid gel
—Estradiol cream
—Estradiol + Lactobacillus crispatus probiotic
👉 Used daily for 2 weeks, then 3x/week for 10 weeks

🌸What Helped Most:

✅ Estradiol 10 mcg + L. crispatus probiotic
→ Best ↑ in good bacteria 🦠
→ ↓ dryness, ↓irritation, optimized pH
→ Balanced feminine microbiome faster than estrogen alone

✅ Hyaluronic acid gel
→ Hydrates + improves comfort (non-hormonal option) subtle microbial changes

A 2024 study revealed (PMID: 38032828)
– 💊 V@ginal estradiol 10 mcg/day for 12 weeks = 🦠 ↑Lactobacillus, ↓pH, ↑pelvic cell health
– 👏 Best effects seen in women with ↓Lactobacillus at start
– 🦠 Oral L. rhamnosus + L. reuteri (for 14+ days) = may ↑ feminine flora in 14+ days
– 🌸 Combo: 0.03 mg estriol + L. acidophilus tablets inserted daily for 12 days = improved symptoms + tissue health

✅ LifeMod Action Checklist:

🔸 Estradiol to lady parts (talk to your doc)
🔸 Probiotic like L. crispatus, L. acidophilus
🔸 Hyaluronic acid topical moisturizer (daily then 3x/week)
🔸 Fragrance-free pH balanced wash or just warm water
🔸 Add oral probiotics + fiber to support from the inside out
🔸 Exercise = ↑circulation + ↓inflammation

🧪 Let’s talk about a woman’s pH down there.

Your pH plays a major role in keeping your feminine microbiome healthy. The optimal environment is slightly acidic—between 3.5 and 4.5.

🤨 Why care?
pHis the most important thing for us ladies! That acidity keeps bad bacteria, yeast, and infections (even STIs) in check. This balance is maintained by good bacteria called Lactobacillus.

🤔What happens when pH is off?
When pH rises above 4.5, it can lead to discharge, dryness, itching, odor, recurring infections—even fertility issues.

The truth? Many everyday habits we think are harmless can quietly disrupt our pH.

Here are some big ones:

🔺 Water-based l***s — Neutral pH (~7) and preservatives can destroy Lactobacillus.
🔔 S/men — pH around 7.2–8 (PMID: 33507718). It temporarily shifts your pH.
🔔 Tampons —Absorb not just blood but also protective mucus that carries good bacteria.
🔔 Birth control pills – Can alter hormone levels, affecting feminine flora
🔔 Antibiotics – Kill good bacteria along with the bad.
🔔 Sugary, processed, low-fiber foods Sugary, processed, low-fiber foods – Feed the wrong microbes and deplete the good ones.
🔔And more. See previous post– 13 Surprising Ways You’re Disrupting Your Feminine Microbiome Without Knowing It

⚠️ Your body is wise. When pH shifts, it speaks—through odor, discharge, or irritation.

✅ What to do If you feel discomfort:

🔸 Avoid pH disruptors like the plague.
🔸 Grow Lactobacillus with probiotic foods like yogurt and sauerkraut daily and eat the rainbow of fruits and vegetables
🔸 Take women specific probiotics supplements at bedtime on an empty stomach
🔸 Give it 30 consistent days.

🌿 Why I Don’t Recommend Staying on a Low FODMAP Diet Long-Term 🌿

Even though it does work in the short term

Let’s be real—Low FODMAP helps

Reduce gas, bloating, ab pain and other IBS symptoms. The science backs it:

📚 Clinical Evidence:

✔️ 2015 Meta-Analysis (PMID: 25982757)
6 RCTs + 16 non-RCTs in people with IBS and IBD
➤ Study length: 4–12 weeks
➤ Reduced abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, and distension
➤ Improved IBS severity scores and quality of life

✔️ 2017 Meta-Analysis (PMID: 28846594)
22 studies (6 RCTs + 16 non-RCT)
➤ Short-term improvement in gut symptoms, better daily function & well-being
➤ Study length: 4–12 weeks

✔️ 2021 Clinical Trial – IBS-D Patients (PMID: 34371976)
➤ 12-week Low FODMAP diet
➤ Reduced digestive symptoms, anxiety, somatic symptoms, and interpersonal sensitivity
➤ Improved gut barrier integrity, lowered inflammation & dysbiosis

✔️ 2021 Clinical Trial – LF-GFD Diet (PMID: 34261437)
➤ 6-week Low FODMAP + gluten-free diet in IBS patients
➤ Improved IBS symptoms, healthier gut microbiota, lower f***l calprotectin (inflammation marker)

✅ Short-term PROs: Symptom relief, inflammation reduction, better gut barrier health.

❌ But I don’t support long-term use. Gut health needs food diversity to grow and heal. We need more studies lasting >12 weeks.

Because:
🔻 It limits microbiome diversity
🔻 Can cause new imbalances
🔻 Feels isolating, anxiety-inducing, not healing
🔻 Risk of nutrient deficiencies
🙅‍♀️ I don’t believe in micromanaging every bite.
💡 I believe in building resilience, not food fear.

🛠️ My gut-honest plan:
Use Low FODMAP diet as a tool—for 4–12 weeks max
Take a probiotic during restriction - for 10% off + my Probiotic Starter Guide - https://us.fullscript.com/welcome/lshapson?source=shareable_protocol&source_record=TXVsdGlQYXRpZW50UGxhbi0xOTA4OQ%3D%3D

Then slowly reintroduce foods, build variety, grow a resilient gut!
💬 Let’s heal your gut, not shrink your plate. Gut health isn’t fear. It’s freedom.

⚠️ Is Fungal Overgrowth the Hidden Reason You Can’t Lose Weight? ⚠️

I had a patient who was doing everything right—

✅ Grain free, whole food & organic
✅ Exercised 3x week with a trainer
✅ No obvious health issues… except overweight and toenail fungus.

No matter what she did, she couldn’t lose a single pound.

Fungal overgrowth isn’t just a gut issue—it’s a metabolic, hormonal, and immune disruption that affects the whole body.

💡 The breakthrough happened when we supported everything!

Here’s why:

👉 Fungal Toxins Mimic Estrogen (Mycoestrogens)
Some mold toxins (mycotoxins) act like super-charged estrogen—stronger than your body’s own.

👉 Creates Chronic Inflammation
– Fungal toxins like acetaldehyde trigger low-grade inflammation
– Inflammation blocks leptin, the hormone that tells your body to burn fat
– Also increases cortisol and insulin resistance—two belly fat drivers

👉 Disrupts Blood Sugar & Cravings
Fungi feed on sugar—and know how to ask for it via intense carb/sugar cravings, blood sugar crashes, and rollercoasters that sabotage weight loss

👉 Slows Detoxification Pathways
Fungal overgrowth can block Phase 2 liver detox—especially glucuronidation
⬇️ Hormones and toxins recirculate instead of being eliminated =
➡️ Hormone imbalance, water retention & stubborn fat

👉 Disrupts Gut Microbiome Balance
Suppresses helpful bacteria like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium
Damages gut lining → leaky gut, inflammation, and metabolic slowdown

This can lead to:
– Weight gain & stubborn fat
– Hormone imbalance
– Low testosterone in men
– Male breast development
– Weak, flaccid muscles

👀 Fungal toxicity is more common than you think—thanks to antibiotic overuse and antibiotic-like chemicals in preservatives, pesticides, and chlorine—and it often goes undetected.

Could this be you? Let’s chat. 💪

🚨 Let’s talk about a common yet frustrating and embarrassing issue: recurring fishy odor down there.
BV (Bacterial Vaginosis) is an overgrowth of harmful bacteria down there, causing symptoms like thin gray-white discharge, fishy odor, itching, and burning during urination.
Typical medical treatment is one-size-fits-all approach = antibiotics
Metronidazole (Flagyl)
Clindamycin (Cleocin)
These initially “cures” around 70-85% of cases.

But here’s the problem—50% of women experience a recurrence within 6 months. PMID: 16652274

This is unacceptable.

It’s emotionally draining, leading to shame and frustration.

Why does it come back?
Because we’ve been using the same antibiotics since the 1980s (Metronidazole) and the 2000’s (Clindamycin) — 45 years with no real innovation! No wonder the recurrence rate is so high! 🤦‍♀️

Antibiotic Problems
😕 focus on suppressing disruptive microbes while increasing risk of antibiotic-resistant microbes
😕 deplete protective microbes PMID: 33814990
😕 is a short term treatment often without follow up
😕 so not break down bioflims– protective layers formed by bacteria to shield themselves from threats, like antibiotics.
😕 is not long-term solution

The Long Term Solution:

🔸Learn about the 12 Feminine Microbiome Disruptors that negatively impact your lady bits (see other post) and make appropriate adjustment there.

🔸Regrow protective microbiome! Taking probiotics orally and inserting women specific probiotics directly into your hooha at bedtime.

🔸 Schedule a call with me. I’ll give you protocols to bulletproof your lady parts!

FUN FACT
BV is found in about 30% of women each year, and 84% of cases are asymptomatic! Read that again, no symptoms! Feminine microbiome testing can detect this before symptoms appear. DM me if you want this test!

🌿 Can probiotics lead to a more a positive mood? 🧠✨

This study says yes! A happy gut might mean a happier mood in people

😊👉 A small randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in 58 nursing students using 5 billion heat killed probiotics over 4 weeks showed that probiotics can enhance mood in those *without* mental health diagnosis!

They reported:
👍 Increased friendliness
👍 Greater vigor
👍 Higher motivation
👍 More feelings of relaxation

Three key things stand out about this study:
1️⃣ The dose was low. Only 5 Billion per pill
2️⃣ The probiotics were heat killed, not living! There is a myth that probiotics have to be refrigerated or alive to be effective. This study proves differently.
3️⃣ These people did not have a mental health diagnosis, like depression, or anxiety. So it took their mood from normal to better!

🧘‍♀️💆‍♂️ So, next time you're thinking about self-care, consider nourishing your gut with a good probiotic. Your digestive system and mood might just thank you! 🌟🌱

Have an unhappy kiddo? Kid not sleeping? Tried everything and nothing’s working? It could be their gut and what they are eating.

Gut inflammation can show up as gas, reflux, eczema, diaper rash, or frequent crying — especially after feedings. Because of the gut-brain connection, ongoing inflammation may also impact mood and behavior, making babies more fussy, clingy, or hard to soothe.

🍼 Not all baby food is created equal — and many store-bought options contain:
-Low Nutrient Value grains like wheat, corn, rice, or oats are low in protein, fat, fiber, and micronutrients — not ideal for the developing microbiome.

-Lectins + Leaky Gut
Grains contain lectins (like gluten), plant proteins that can irritate the gut lining and contribute to leaky gut.

-Gut-Inflamming Additives
– Artificial Sweeteners: Sucralose, Aspartame, Sorbitol
– Thickeners: Carrageenan, Cellulose, Gums
– Preservatives: BHA, BHT
– Emulsifiers: Polysorbate 80, Mono-/Diglycerides
– Flavor Enhancers & Colors: MSG, Titanium Dioxide
– Refined sugars: cane sugar, high fructose corn syrup, maltodextrin

🥣 In our home, every puree is made with whole foods: organic veggies, grassfed meats, butter, avocado, organ meats, and always blended with bone or meat broth.

Why broth?
✔️ Easy to digest
✔️ Rich in amino acids & minerals
✔️ Supports gut lining & immune health

See previous post “Bone Broth step aside! What is meat stock? Which is better for gut health?”

Nourish from the start — say goodbye to the fuss and hello to a happy, thriving kiddo.

Still Not Feeling Like Yourself? It Could Be Mold — Even If You Can’t See It.

Chronic fatigue, brain fog, strange rashes, or food sensitivities that seem to change every day? 🧠🥴

You might be dealing with hidden mold exposure.

As Dave Asprey (the “Father of Biohacking” and host of The Human Upgrade podcast) shares in Moldy Movie, mold toxicity was one of the biggest hidden barriers to his energy and brain performance. He called it “the invisible enemy of high achievers.”
And Dr. Richie Shoemaker (survivingmold.com), a pioneer in healing mold illness, shows how mold can trigger chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS) — which keeps your immune system in constant overdrive.

🧠 Common Mold-Related Symptoms:

✅ Year-round allergies
✅ Persistent runny nose or sinus pressure
✅ Brain fog, mood changes, or anxiety
✅ Skin rashes or itching
✅ Chronic inflammation
✅ Day-to-day food reactions
✅ Hormone shifts or menstrual changes

Even if you don't see mold, it could be hiding:
🌫️ Behind walls
🌫️ Under flooring
🌫️ In attics, basements, crawl spaces
🌫️ And especially in your HVAC system, spreading spores and mycotoxins room to room

🏠 In Your Home, Look For:
• Musty or “earthy” smells
• Past water damage — roofs, basements, or plumbing
• Water stains on walls or ceilings
• Unexplained humidity or condensation

🧪 Want to Get Real Answers?
You can test your environment with professional mold inspectors — or test your body with:

Urine MycoTox Test (for mold toxins)

OAT (Organic Acids Test) — to check detox and fungal markers

🌿 Bloating’s Worst Enemy: Digestive Enzymes

Taking digestive enzymes can be an important part of managing symptoms and improving digestive health.

Get:

1️⃣ Symptom Relief Now
Enzymes are to be taken with each meal to assist with breaking down foods, thus reducing discomfort, bloat, acid reflux, and cramping.

2️⃣ Enhanced Digestion & Nutrient Absorption
In order to heal, your body needs nutrients. But if your gut isn’t functioning well, you may not be absorbing everything you need. Enzymes can help pick up the slack.

3️⃣ Reduced Digestive Workload
Enzymes can reduce the workload on the gastrointestinal tract, giving it a break so it can heal.

5️⃣ Decreased Gas and Bloat
In conditions like SIBO, where there is an abnormal increase in the number of bacteria in the small intestine, undigested food can ferment by those bacteria, leading to gas and bloating. Enzymes leave less substrate for bacteria to ferment, thus reducing symptoms.

💡LifeMod Pro tip: The enzymes must contain Betaine HCL—it’s the most overlooked, but most essential.

💡LifeMod Pro tip:
Digestive enzymes can be a helpful short-term tool — but they’re not a long-term fix.

If you're relying on them daily just to feel “normal,” it may be a sign your gut needs deeper support.
