👶✨ Born via C-section? Here’s what you should know about a baby's gut health!
Did you know that HOW your baby is born shapes their gut microbiome — and that impacts their health for years?
🌀 Natural Birth:
Baby passes through the birth canal and inherits mom’s microbiome — Maternal microbiome—gut and v/ginal—play a far bigger role and should be tested and optimized before delivery (PMID: 35590163).
—This is crucial for gut development, immune balance, and even brain health.
🧼 C-Section Birth:
Baby skips the birth canal and instead picks up skin and hospital microbes. This can lead to:
—Less diverse gut flora (PMID: 20566857)
—More gas, colic, and constipation
—Microbial imbalances until solid food introduction
📣 What We Know:
Decreased Lactobacillus & Bifidobacterium in early infancy is associated with a greater risk of the following at 5 years old (PMID: 36705040, PMID: 19220322)
-- asthma
-- allergies
-- childhood obesity
Note From Me:
C-sections can be life-saving and unavoidable. This isn’t about shame — it’s about informed choices and reducing elective C-sections when not medically needed.
✨ If a C-Section is required— here’s how to support baby’s microbiome:
➤➤ Ask about V/ginal Seeding: A swab of mom’s vaginal microbes applied to baby’s face/mouth post-birth. May temporarily nudge microbiome closer to vaginal-born. Long-term health benefits remain unproven (PMID: 35590163). In a study of 60 babies, no adverse events were reported (PMID: 36334724).
➤Skin-to-skin contact: Baby gets essential microbes from mom’s chest and skin
➤Breastfeeding: Provides prebiotics and living probiotics to support microbiome growth
➤Environmental exposure: Dirt, animals, whole foods — yes, nature helps!
➤ Infant Probiotics: See previous post Colicky Baby to see recommended brands.
➤ Avoid unnecessary antibiotics: Ex: mom OPT out of eye ointment routinely given to all newborns at birth
Would you try microbiome seeding?
