😯 The Hidden Link Sabotaging Pregnancy & IVF

If you're struggling to get pregnant, stay pregnant, or facing IVF challenges… listen up.

🧠 Your reproductive microbiome plays a huge role in fertility—more than most fertility doctors aren’t even aware of!

When healthy bacteria like Lactobacilli decrease down there, other bacteria such as Gardnerella (the culprit to fishy odor) overgrow and it leads to shifts to pro-inflammatory processes. PMID: 29396486

❌ These changes reduce chances for successful pregnancy and negatively impact conceiving, miscarriage, preterm birth, failed implantation, or IVF that doesn’t work.
PMID: 35909180
PMID: 27717732
PMID: 37780845
PMID: 37271782
PMID: 33806442

🏠 Imagine your body is a house and Lactobacillus are security guards protecting your front door and windows from trespassers.

But let’s say you’ve been dealing with stress, taking antibiotics, eating poorly, or skipping sleep, you slack on paying your bills— suddenly, some of those guards leave their post.

With fewer guards, your mucus membrane (the protective walls of your house) start to weaken. Now, the bad guys (harmful bacteria) see an opening.

They break in, trash the place, and start eating the drywall (your pelvic and endometrial lining). They leave behind waste — smells, mess, and chaos.

This leads to inflammation (smoke damage), odor (garbage smell), pain (broken glass), and even fertility struggles (locked or broken baby room door).

The clinical data is 🔥—and it exposes a HUGE missing piece in fertility: your reproductive microbiome!

Smelling fishy down there isn’t normal. It’s a sign of bacterial vaginosis (BV)—an overgrowth of the wrong bacteria and loss of protective Lactobacillus species.

Lactobacillus produces lactic acid to keep your pH down there below 4.5, creating an acidic environment hostile to pathogens. When the pH goes above 4.5, other unwanted microbes can thrive.

Why it matters:
⚠️ BV increases your risk of STIs (like chlamydia), HIV, HPV. (PMID: 34433796)
⚠️ BV Increases risk for pregnancy complications, like preterm birth rate, lower birth weight, and higher rate of neonatal intensive care unit admission (PMID: 36860946,)
⚠️ Recurrence rates are shockingly high—50% within 6 months!
Unacceptable! Relying on antibiotics alone is not the solution—and for the past 45 years, medical doctors have had only two options: metronidazole or clindamycin. No new innovations—until now!

What can you do about it?
🔸Learn which lifestyle habits cause the loss of Lactobacillus in the v/gina so you can make changes. If you are sexually active, this is esp important for you. S/men, l***s and spermicide containing condoms destroy lactobacillus.
🔸Fix your gut! Did you know that the v/ginal microbiome overlap by 32% and urinary microbiomes by 62.5% with the bacteria in your gut? (PMID: 34084752). Take a high-quality probiotic daily!
🔸Stay tuned for upcoming posts packed with actionable insights and expert tips!

💡 Pro Tip: What is your pH? You can test your v/ginal pH at home with test strips—90% of BV cases have a pH > 4.5. This will clue you into your lactobacillus population.

💡 Pro Tip: if antibiotics are part of your BV treatment, pairing them with women specific probiotics (like Lactobacillus crispatus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14) can reduce recurrence rates. PMID: 16697231

It’s time for innovation in BV treatment!

Hot take 🔥 Alkaline water is total BS and BAD for your gut.
Here’s the raw truth 👇

SCAM #1
So why is “alkaline water” a scam?
👉 The second it hits your stomach, your highly acidic stomach juice (pH ~1.5–3.5) takes over. That fancy alkaline label? P**f, gone. No systemic “alkalizing” magic.

SCAM #2
💥 And worse — this temporarily reduces stomach acidity = BAD for gut health, It dilutes your stomach acid, wrecks digestion, blocks nutrient absorption (iron, B12, proteins), and opens the door for bloating + infections (bacteria & parasite).

SCAM #3
✔️ Most natural spring waters are slightly acidic to close to neutral pH ~7.7 and only slightly alkaline).
❌ “Alkaline” bottled water: pH 8–9.5

You’re paying $$ for glorified baking soda water!
Let’s look at pH levels of waters, natural!
Spring Water: Exactly how nature designed it.
💧Bottled sparkling water: 4.9–5.5 (acidic, due to CO2)
💧Gerolsteiner Spring: pH ~5.9 (acidic)
💧Arrowhead Spring Water – pH 6.8 (slightly acidic)
💧Crystal Geyser – pH 6.9 (slightly acidic)
💧Poland Spring – pH 7.2 (neutral)
💧Deer Park – pH 7.5 (slightly alkaline)
💧Evian – pH 7.2 (neutral)
💧Volvic – pH 7.5 (slightly alkaline)
💧San Pellegrino Spring: pH ~7.6 (slightly alkaline)
💧Fiji – pH 7.6–7.8 (slightly alkaline)
💧Zephyrhills – pH 7.7 (slightly alkaline)
💧Acqua Panna – pH 8.0 (alkaline)

Other waters:
💧Normal saline: 5.4 (acidic)
💧Distilled water: 5.7 (acidic)
💧Tap water / filtered water: ~7.5 (slightly alkaline)
💧Town tap water: ~7.5 (neutral)
💧EPA says safe drinking water = pH 6.5–8.5.
💧Seawater: ~8
💧Swimming pool: 7.2–7.5
💧Facial mineral waters: 7.5–8
💧Makeup remover water: acidic ~5–6
PMID: 28228777 PMID: 23956962

⚠️ Never drink alkaline water with meals or within 3 hours after eating.
Who should DEFINITELY avoid alkaline water? ❌
Bloating
Acid reflux / GERD
Low stomach acid
SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)
Anemia (iron absorption needs stomach acid)
IBS
Mineral deficiencies

💡 Action step: Save your $$, hydrate with clean spring or filtered tap water. If you want gut + hormone + mineral health → focus on food, digestion, and actual nutrient absorption.

LifeMod Tip:
Avoid drinking water during meals, 30 minutes before eating, and for 1 hour after eating.

🦠 What is Leaky Feminine Barrier?

✨ What’s a “Leaky Feminine Barrier”?✨
It’s not an official medical diagnosis — it’s a way to describe what happens when your pelvic membranes (internal) gets weakened.

✨ How does it happen? ✨
When protective Lactobacillus drop from gut health issues, antibiotics and other lifestyle habits, your mucus membrane protection layer drops soon after. Your endometrial lining becomes exposed and vulnerable. “Bad” bacteria have been digesting mucus membrane and pelvic membranes as a food source. And those unwanted microbes release their trash increasing damage. That opens the door for → inflammation, odor, pain, even fertility struggles 😖.

✨ Why this important mucus membrane exists✨
It’s protective!
1️⃣ L. crispatus + its Lactobacillus friends thrive and line on the mucosal layer. It’s their home!
2️⃣ Because they “live there,” they form a shield—like bodyguards—standing in the way of bad microbes.
3️⃣ This keeps the lining calm, strong, and less vulnerable to irritation or infection.

✨ How Lactobacillus Protects You✨
When our feminine microbiome is dominated by lactobacillus >90%, they provide:
1️⃣ Acidity power → Makes lactic acid + hydrogen peroxide to keep things acidic to prevent growth of unwanted species(bye-bye Gardnerella cause of that fishy odor).
2️⃣ Barrier defense → Think of lactobacillus as tiny bodyguards, locking arms to act as a physical barrier to keep bad microbes away & tissues protected and calm.

💡 Why this is key
✔️ Lower inflammation - less pain, discomfort, and better fertility
✔️ Healthy feminine microbiome lactobacillus dominant = more comfort + fertility support
✔️ Stronger mucosal integrity = less irritation & fewer infections

🧬 Your feminine microbiome changes throughout your cycle — and knowing when to support it is key.

Right after your period, levels of protective lactobacillus drop. PMID: 32641429
Why?

Because during your period, you’re shedding the uterine lining and that also flushes out some of the good microbes and protective mucus layer, where they live.

👉 The best time to use a women’s specific probiotic suppository is the day after your period ends, when bleeding has stopped.

👉 How to use the suppository?
Insert 1 capsule into your lady parts at bedtime for 2 consecutive nights.

Bring in support and set the rest of your month up for success.

By doing this, you’re:
✅ Rebuilding your microbiome with Lactobacillus
✅ Restoring pH down there
✅ Preventing imbalances before they start
✅ Reducing risk for odor, itch, UTI, pain, discomfort, dryness
✅ Reducing risk for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV, STIs
✅ Reducing inflammation in the uterus
✅ Creating a fertile-friendly environment, improving fertility chances

Timing matters. Support your cycle smartly.

Fishy smell down there? That’s a red flag. And it has to do with your pH levels.

💡 Why pH matters:
– Healthy optimal pH = 3.5–4.5 – slightly acidic. PMID: 22746335
– This acidity keeps bad bacteria, yeast, and even some STIs in check.
– The balance is maintained by good bacteria called Lactobacillus.

🔬 How it works:
– Lactobacillus release lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide,
– Keeps pH down there below 4.5
🚫 Creates an acidic environment bad microbes can’t survive in

What goes wrong:
1️⃣ Too few of protective Lactobacillus bacteria
2️⃣ pH rises above 4.5 → less acidic
3️⃣ Then, too much of the wrong microbes grow
4️⃣ Result? Fishy odor, gray/white discharge, itching, dryness, recurring infections, fertility issues (miscarriage, preterm birth, IVF implantation failure)

The truth? Many everyday habits we think are harmless can quietly disrupt our pH and kill our protective Lactobacillus. See previous post “Bad habits down there: things you thought were harmless.

✅ Can you check your pH at home?
YES! It’s cheap and available on Amazon. Search v/ginal pH test strips or feminine ph test strips.

Every woman should be checking because knowing your pH is power. 🧠💪

😧 And, if your results come back > 4.5, you have work to do –even if you don’t have symptoms. Up to 84% of women with BV could have ZERO symptoms - scary! (PMID: 35096634).

🌟 What do breast milk and adult gut health have in common?

Way more than you think. 👶🧠✨

Breastmilk is packed with over 200 Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs)—special prebiotic sugars that babies can’t even digest.
Why? Because they’re not meant to feed the baby...

They’re made to feed the baby’s gut bacteria. 🦠🌱

One of the most powerful and most studied HMOs is called 2’-Fucosyllactose (2’-FL). It passes through the digestive tract untouched and lands in the colon, where it feeds the good guys—especially Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus.

That process also produces butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) that helps heal a leaky gut lining, and lowers gut inflammation. 🙌

🔸 2-FL Gut Hack Snapshot:
• Feeds your good gut bugs especially Bifidobacteria,
• Does not cause bloating!
• Strengthens gut lining + blocks harmful bacteria
• Reduces leaky gut
• Reduces gut inflammation by increasing butyrate production
• Especially powerful after antibiotic use or frequent UTIs - take 3 months
PMID: 33799455

📚 In a six week study of taking a drink with 2’-FL, people felt better—they had fewer gut symptoms, more good bacteria in their p**p, and higher levels of gut-friendly chemicals. PMID: 33799455

And here’s the kicker:

Gut supplement companies took notice—and now synthetic 2’-FL is available for adults and kids alike.

🧡 Explore my trusted 2’-FL supplement products here:

✅ For adults: GI Stability by Standard Process - Chew 1-2 per day to start
✅ For children (4+): Children’s Immune by Standard Process -
Chew 1 per day to start (contains dairy)

I often recommend 2’-FL to my patients once they’ve tolerated their first two types of probiotics.

Couldn’t breastfeed your baby (like me)? Weren’t breastfed yourself (also like me)? It’s OK.

Breastfeeding may be the blueprint, but we’ve have access now, too. ✨ PMID: 36075638

👶✨ Born via C-section? Here’s what you should know about a baby's gut health!

Did you know that HOW your baby is born shapes their gut microbiome — and that impacts their health for years?

🌀 Natural Birth:
Baby passes through the birth canal and inherits mom’s microbiome — Maternal microbiome—gut and v/ginal—play a far bigger role and should be tested and optimized before delivery (PMID: 35590163).
—This is crucial for gut development, immune balance, and even brain health.

🧼 C-Section Birth:
Baby skips the birth canal and instead picks up skin and hospital microbes. This can lead to:
—Less diverse gut flora (PMID: 20566857)
—More gas, colic, and constipation
—Microbial imbalances until solid food introduction

📣 What We Know:
Decreased Lactobacillus & Bifidobacterium in early infancy is associated with a greater risk of the following at 5 years old (PMID: 36705040, PMID: 19220322)
-- asthma
-- allergies
-- childhood obesity

Note From Me:

C-sections can be life-saving and unavoidable. This isn’t about shame — it’s about informed choices and reducing elective C-sections when not medically needed.

✨ If a C-Section is required— here’s how to support baby’s microbiome:

➤➤ Ask about V/ginal Seeding: A swab of mom’s vaginal microbes applied to baby’s face/mouth post-birth. May temporarily nudge microbiome closer to vaginal-born. Long-term health benefits remain unproven (PMID: 35590163). In a study of 60 babies, no adverse events were reported (PMID: 36334724).
➤Skin-to-skin contact: Baby gets essential microbes from mom’s chest and skin
➤Breastfeeding: Provides prebiotics and living probiotics to support microbiome growth
➤Environmental exposure: Dirt, animals, whole foods — yes, nature helps!
➤ Infant Probiotics: See previous post Colicky Baby to see recommended brands.
➤ Avoid unnecessary antibiotics: Ex: mom OPT out of eye ointment routinely given to all newborns at birth

Would you try microbiome seeding?

🚫 Not all “feminine washes” are created equal.

Let’s get real — some of those popular washes for down there might be doing more harm than good. 👀

They often contain:
🧪 Detergents that strip away not only dirt but also the natural oils and protective bacteria on the skin and mucosal surfaces. This alters the feminine microbiome, making it harder for beneficial Lactobacilli to thrive.

🧪 Glycerin, Propylene Glycol: while moisturizing, these can alter osmotic balance, increasing feeding yeast overgrowth

🧪 Sodium Benzoate, Disodium EDTA: These prevent microbial growth and destroy protective lactobacillus

🧪 Endocrine disruptors ex Fragrances, can mimic estrogen

🧪 Parabens aka preservatives are antimicrobials that destroy protective lactobacillus

Yes, even if it’s “for external use only,” some of it can make its way inside.

These products create a cycle of dependency.
Many use Vagisil to address odor or discomfort, but the product itself may contribute to the very imbalance it's marketed to fix — causing a cycle of chronic irritation.

✨ The better option?
✅ Use products that are pH balanced, free from parabens, preservatives, and synthetic fragrances —external only, never inside!

✨If you suffer from odor, work on gut health then liver health.
✅ Support a healthy microbiome—eat probiotic-rich foods (yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut).
✅ Take probiotic oral supplements and probiotic feminine suppositories
✅ Avoid processed foods and refined sugars.

Menopausal and Feeling Off "Down There"? Here's What No One Tells You 💥

When estrogen drops (hello, menopause!), it doesn't just mess with your mood—it totally shifts your lady part microbiome, leading to dryness, thin cells, irritation, or infections.

🤨 What’s happening?

→ Less estrogen = ↓ glycogen = ↓ good bacteria = ↑ dryness & infections
→ ↑ pH & ↑microbial diversity = ↑ discomfort
→ ↓ cell turnover = thinner, fragile tissue
→ Topical gels that only ↓ pH don’t help microbiome much

🚨 As your good bacteria go down, and the not-so-good ones can take over.

WHAT ACTUALLY FIXES THIS?👇

🧪 2022 study (PMID: 35353163) tested 3 topical treatments on postmenopausal women with dryness:
—Hyaluronic acid gel
—Estradiol cream
—Estradiol + Lactobacillus crispatus probiotic
👉 Used daily for 2 weeks, then 3x/week for 10 weeks

🌸What Helped Most:

✅ Estradiol 10 mcg + L. crispatus probiotic
→ Best ↑ in good bacteria 🦠
→ ↓ dryness, ↓irritation, optimized pH
→ Balanced feminine microbiome faster than estrogen alone

✅ Hyaluronic acid gel
→ Hydrates + improves comfort (non-hormonal option) subtle microbial changes

A 2024 study revealed (PMID: 38032828)
– 💊 V@ginal estradiol 10 mcg/day for 12 weeks = 🦠 ↑Lactobacillus, ↓pH, ↑pelvic cell health
– 👏 Best effects seen in women with ↓Lactobacillus at start
– 🦠 Oral L. rhamnosus + L. reuteri (for 14+ days) = may ↑ feminine flora in 14+ days
– 🌸 Combo: 0.03 mg estriol + L. acidophilus tablets inserted daily for 12 days = improved symptoms + tissue health

✅ LifeMod Action Checklist:

🔸 Estradiol to lady parts (talk to your doc)
🔸 Probiotic like L. crispatus, L. acidophilus
🔸 Hyaluronic acid topical moisturizer (daily then 3x/week)
🔸 Fragrance-free pH balanced wash or just warm water
🔸 Add oral probiotics + fiber to support from the inside out
🔸 Exercise = ↑circulation + ↓inflammation
