Movement with Sara

Movement with Sara Therapist, dance/movement therapist (MS, LPC, NCC, BC-DMT), group wellness orchestrator, purveyor of joy through dance.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor and a Board-Certified Dance/Movement Therapist in private practice. My clinical experience includes concurrently working with patients and their family/partners at higher levels of care focused on eating disorders as well as OCD, trauma, anxiety, depression. I specialize in treating the mind-body disconnections inherent in body dysmorphia, exercise addiction and chronic pain and illness. I have over two decades of years experience facilitating movement in clinical, therapeutic, recreational and educational settings. I started dancing at three years old and went on to train in ballet, modern, folk dance and jazz and to perform professionally. I taught aerobics classes for some years subsequently but my love of dance was reignited when I discovered conscious dance, primarily in the forms of 5Rhythms and The Nia Technique®. Over the years I have danced everything from Authentic Movement to Gaga/people from Austin to Zurich. I later developed the open improvisation format "danceology" through which I strive to reconnect others to the joy of dance and offer the physical and emotional gifts of body-awareness gleaned through movement. A result of all these experiences, I have developed an international network of fitness and dance, movement and therapy professionals and experience teaching in a number of studios and a range of venues including clinical, educational and fitness environments. I have participated in the startup, marketing/design and management of several movement studios, produced movement-oriented events and trainings and developed an after-school movement program for children. A former and concurrent career track, I have over 20 years work experience in visual communications, project and product management and entrepreneurship. I worked with such prestigious clients as AT&T, Electronic Arts, IBM, Texas Instruments and the San Antonio Museum of Art and numerous small businesses to produce print and interactive marketing and educational material. I helped run a nonprofit and served as the CEO of a rainwater engineering firm with my water-engineer husband for five years. I have three daughters, all of whom love to dance, and live in Bala Cynwyd, PA.

We have come to be danced
Not the pretty dance
Not the pretty pretty, pick me, pick me dance
But the claw our way back into the belly
Of the sacred, sensual animal dance
The unhinged, unplugged, cat is out of its box dance
The holding the precious moment in the palms
Of our hands and feet dance.

We have come to be danced
Not the jiffy b***y, shake your b***y for him dance
But the wring the sadness from our skin dance
The blow the chip off our shoulder dance.
The slap the apology from our posture dance.

We have come to be danced
Not the monkey see, monkey do dance
One two dance like you
One two three, dance like me dance
but the grave robber, tomb stalker
Tearing scabs and scars open dance
The rub the rhythm raw against our soul dance.

We have come to be danced
Not the nice, invisible, self-conscious shuffle
But the matted hair flying, voodoo mama
Shaman shakin’ ancient bones dance
The strip us from our casings, return our wings
Sharpen our claws and tongues dance
The shed dead cells and slip into
The luminous skin of love dance.

We have come to be danced
Not the hold our breath and wallow in the shallow end of the floor dance
But the meeting of the trinity, the body breath and beat dance
The shout hallelujah from the top of our thighs dance
The mother may I?
Yes you may take 10 giant leaps dance
The olly olly oxen free free free dance
The everyone can come to our heaven dance.

We have come to be danced
Where the kingdoms collide
In the cathedral of flesh
To burn back into the light
To unravel, to play, to fly, to pray
To root in skin sanctuary
We have come to be danced

WE HAVE COME.

“PLEASE DON’T USE PHONES ON THE DANCE FLOOR”

After club floors became stilted in the TikTok era, nightlife spaces in New York started to ban phones. “I’d rather live in the moment and feel the joy,” one reveler said.

A large analysis of over 14,000 participants found that dancing with others can ease symptoms of depression more effectively than walking, yoga, or even antidepressants. Dance activates a “neurochemical symphony” — releasing dopamine, endorphins, and oxytocin — which together boost mood, energy, and connection. Scientists also found that when people move in sync, their brains align in a process called interbrain synchrony, strengthening feelings of trust and belonging. Because it blends movement, music, and expression, dance allows emotional release without words and supports overall mental health.

People have been dancing to heal and connect for 5,000 years (much much longer than yoga I might add). Why does science always have to “validate” something we have known intuitively for a very long time. Dance/ movement therapists are in the business of reminding people.

A new analysis shows that moving to music with others can be a powerful way to ease symptoms of depression. Unlike walking or yoga, dance engages the brain in a unique “neurochemical symphony,” blending physical activity with joy, connection, and self-expression. Here's why it helps and how to harness it, according to experts: https://on.natgeo.com/47WKONQ
