This is a rarely seen painting called Life Energy System. It was the first Sacred Mirror I painted in 1979 shortly after Allyson’s inspiration to do the series. The painting brought together several different subtle energy systems, the chakras, acupuncture meridians and auras in one portrait (perhaps familiar imagery these days but not 46 years ago). It was meant to be a focusing device for re-charging oneself. You just look into the eyes of the painting and imagine it’s a mirror reflecting back a hidden dimension of your own being. Surprisingly effective in the right frame of mind.

In 1980 I painted the Psychic Energy System which includes all these systems and an X-ray view of the anatomical body. I felt the Psychic Energy System was a superior piece so I retired the Life Energy System from the Sacred Mirrors. The Psychic Energy System inspired a new method of depicting the figure that I continued throughout my lifetime. Sometimes our initiating visions are the alchemical lead from which spiritual gold is refined.

Science shows that affection can do far more than lift your mood — it can literally reshape your biology. Through a process called epigenetics, acts like cuddling, hugging, or simply feeling loved can activate repair genes that promote healing and silence those linked to chronic diseases and inflammation.

When you connect emotionally, your body releases oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, the “feel-good” chemicals that lower cortisol (the stress hormone) and support cellular repair. Over time, this can reduce anxiety, boost immunity, and even slow down aging at the genetic level.

So yes — love doesn’t just touch your heart; it rewrites the code of your health.

NOTHING, SOMETHING, EVERYTHING

Think of a continuum from nothing, to something, to everything.

NOTHING includes designations such as muddled, confused, mixed, and empty. It's important because it's considered the state prior to the beginning of the universe and it's also an important daily phenomena, such as an open door or open space.

SOMETHING is important because recognized things are the basis of much of our knowledge and that these distinctions are part of the mosaic of what we know. Things also belong to the framework of yin and yang, which should be seen as reciprocal pairs.

EVERYTHING is Tao as a whole. It includes both nothing and all somethings. More crucially, it unites all reciprocal pairs and so is complete. All three categories, nothing included, are marked by change and movement, but since all are within Tao, all remains whole.

Another way to frame our philosophy is disorder and order. Everything under the label of nothing belongs to disorder. That means it cannot be measured, cannot be organized, cannot be divided, and that no usable internal definition can be given to it. Order is organization and structure. It is marked by rules, principles, measurement, definition, and pragmatic usability. Order and disorder are in constant interchange. Things fall apart, and things are organized out of confusion, but again, all is contained within the everything of Tao.
