After years of moving around the world with her husband in the Air Force, Beth Dunning and her family settled in Titusville, Pennsylvania, to enjoy retirement and spend more time with her grandchildren.

But when lumbar spinal stenosis left her in severe back pain, she found herself nearly homebound and missing out on special family moments. Everyday movements like standing upright, walking or getting into a car became painful challenges. Her doctor recommended physical therapy and Beth turned to NovaCare Rehabilitation in Titusville.

Working with Physical Therapist Assistant Lisa Wonderling and our team, Beth focused on exercises to strengthen her core, improve flexibility and posture and increase mobility. They worked on gentle stretching, manual therapy and stability training to relieve pressure on the spine and restore function.

Today, Beth says she feels incredible. She’s shed more than 80 pounds, regained her independence and enjoys attending her grandchildren’s events again.

“I was hunched over and in pain before therapy,” Beth said. “Now I’m out and about, confident to try almost anything. Lisa encouraged and supported me every step of the way.”

No one wants to hear the words, "you have cancer."

Tracy Fronko was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024 and was quickly facing a world of fear and uncertainty. She had to schedule appointments, learn about different doctors, attend consultations and plan for treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, medications and physical therapy. All of this became her new, overwhelming reality. On top of that, she also had to deal with the side effects of these treatments.

Tracy’s side effects led her to see Megan Storm, ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation Program Director and a physical therapist. Tracy had first heard Megan speak at a Project 31 meeting, a breast cancer support group, at Mercy on Memorial. Megan explained how cancer treatments can worsen pelvic floor issues.

“So, I called and got a referral from my surgeon,” she shared. “Made my appointment.”

Megan worked with Tracy to help her return to the activities she loved, while making sure she felt respected and supported. At 63, Tracy had finished half and full marathons, completed triathlons and enjoyed adventures like parasailing, biking and skiing. She wanted to keep living an active life, including helping her neighbors by pulling weeds and walking their dogs. Megan designed a program for Tracy focused on building core and hip strength.

“I love trying any new adventure I can," she stated. “However, my pelvic floor issues limited my ability.”

Thankfully, the plan not only met but exceeded Tracy’s expectations. Being able to do jumping jacks again was a big moment for her. She continues to celebrate small victories and works on her exercises every day. She states she’s feeling great and is looking forward to getting back to everything.

Harold Rosen enjoys watching football, investing in the stock market and playing with his dog, Ruby. Unfortunately, the flu hit hard last Christmas. It led to respiratory issues that landed him in and out of the hospital. Eventually, he lost strength, especially in his legs and back. He couldn't stand or walk and needed a mechanical lift to get into bed. And he certainly couldn't walk Ruby.

That's when Harold came to work with Physical Therapists Michelle Byrd and Madeline Devereux. He worked hard and made progress. Harold recently took his first steps since being hospitalized.

"Michelle and Madeline have inspired me to push harder to reach my goals," he said. "I'm feeling better and stronger. [I'm] looking forward to being able to go out for walks with my dog."
