Keep Your Feet Happy During Fall Vacation Adventures! 🍂👣

Don't let sore, tired feet ruin your autumn getaway!
Moisturize daily to combat dry air, and take time for simple foot exercises like toe curls and ankle rotations to prevent cramps during long sightseeing days.
After exploring all day, treat yourself to a relaxing foot massage with lotion to boost circulation and refresh tired skin.

Choose comfortable shoes with good arch support for walking tours and save the cute heels for dinner out.
If you experience persistent foot pain during your trip, don't ignore it – see a podiatrist when you return home.

Here are some things to know about shoe size:

How to measure your foot
To measure your foot, stand with your weight on one foot and a slight bend in your knees. Trace your foot's outline on paper with a pen or pencil. Then, measure the distance between the tip of your big toe and the outermost part of your heel.

How to find the right shoe size
When choosing shoes, you should have about an inch of space between your toes and the tip of your shoe. You can also check that there's enough space for your finger to fit snugly between the heel of your foot and the heel of your shoe.

Different foot sizes
It's common for feet to be slightly different sizes, so you should measure both feet. If your feet are different sizes, you should buy shoes based on the larger foot.

Shoe width
In addition to length, you can measure your foot's width to determine if you need narrow, medium, or wide shoes.

Comfort
The most important factor when choosing shoes is comfort. Most shoes can't be broken in, so if a shoe isn't comfortable, it's not suitable.

Shoe size conversion
To convert women's shoe sizes to men's, subtract 1.5 from the women's size. To convert men's shoe sizes to women's, add 1.5 to the men's size.

Kids' shoe sizes
Kids' shoe sizes are different from adult sizes because children's feet grow quickly. Kids' shoe sizes are often divided into categories like toddler, small kids, and big kids.

Back to school shoe shopping?
Remember these tips from American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA)
🦶Children's Feet Change With Age. Shoe and sock sizes may change every few months as a child's feet grow.

🦶Shoes That Don't Fit Properly Can Aggravate the Feet. Always measure a child's feet before buying shoes, and watch for signs of irritation.

🦶Never Hand Down Footwear. Just because a shoe size fits one child comfortably doesn't mean it will fit another the same way. Also, sharing shoes can spread fungi like athlete's foot and nail fungus.

🦶Examine the Soles. Children may wear through the sole of shoes more quickly than they outgrow shoes. Uneven wear in the toe or heel can indicate a foot problem that should be checked by a podiatrist.

🦶Take Your Child Shoe Shopping. Every shoe fits differently. Letting a kid have a say in the shoe buying process promotes healthy foot habits down the road.

🦶Always Buy for the Larger Foot. Feet are seldom precisely the same size.

🦶Buy Shoes That Do Not Need a “Break-In” Period. Shoes should be comfortable immediately. Also make sure to have your kid try on shoes with socks or tights, if that's how they'll be worn.

Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries among older people, according to the CDC. Each year, three million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries. More than 800,000 patients a year require hospitalizations due to a fall injury.

"Preventing falls among older Americans is a top health priority, and improved balance can help reduce the risk of a fall," said Matthew Garoufalis, DPM, a podiatrist and past president of APMA. "Proper footwear can help improve balance, especially in older people who may struggle with mobility and balance issues."

When selecting a shoe to improve balance, keep these guidelines in mind:

Put shoes to the 1-2-3 test.
Step 1: Press on both sides of the heel area to ensure the heel is stiff and won't collapse.
Step 2: Bend the shoe to check for toe flexibility. The shoe shouldn't bend too much in the toe box area, but it shouldn't be too stiff and inflexible either.
Step 3: Try twisting the shoe; it shouldn't twist in the middle.

The most common symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include burning, numbness, tingling, or shooting or stabbing pain in the toes and/or fingertips. Any change in sensation in the fingers or toes may be a symptom of peripheral neuropathy. Be sure to report any abnormal sensations to your doctor. Those sensations may be the first sign of another problem, such as diabetes.
