Disordered Eating in College Athletes: Suggestions for Better Prevention and Treatment

Studies show that 84% of college athletes have engaged in disordered eating patterns or weight control behaviors. They are also less likely to seek mental health support due to limited access to care, stigma, and sport-specific systemic barriers.

We are delighted to have as our guest in this episode, Dr. Michael Rich, MD, MPH, who practices adolescent medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital and is an associate professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. He is the founder and director of the Digital Wellness Lab and the Clinic for Interactive Media and Internet Disorders (CIMAID), the first evidence-based medical program addressing physical, mental, and social health issues associated with digital technology use, and is also the author of "The Mediatrician's Book" (2024). He chats with Equilibria psychologist, Erica Burgoon, PhD, about the emotional, mental, and social impacts of social media and screens on children & young adults. While it's challenging to escape the omnipresence of screens across many areas of our lives, it is possible to manage how we use and engage with them. They discuss strategies for how to promote positive and healthy digital experiences for your kids, and help foster healthier relationships between your kids and their screens and devices.

There is no one "right" or "normal" way that a relationship "should" look like. Wednesday Martin, PhD, an anthropologist, author of multiple best-sellers, and currently training to become a s*x therapist, advocates for the use of neutral terms such as "non-monogamy" because the commonly used phrases of "ethical non-monogamy" or "consensual non-monogamy" have that connotation of what's "normal." She shares her personal story with Equilibria psychologist, Erika Kawamura, PsyD, about her own journey of coming from a family with parents in a traditional heteros*xual marriage and having the common preconceived notions about relationships for herself (date, move-in together, get married) to embracing her authentic self to now being in a platonic, non-monogamous marriage. She discusses the fears, the internal conflicted feelings, and the back-and-forth that she and her husband went through during the process of opening up their marriage. Intertwined in her personal story are healthy strategies to utilize when partners mutually want to practice non-monogamy, such as communication being the key and other important factors to consider.

Ep 21: Masking Burnout: Who's Vulnerable and What We Can Do
What do healthcare professionals, first responders, caregivers, and even some students and parents have in common? Jessica "Jessi" Gold, MD is a psychiatrist, a Chief Wellness Officer at the University of Tennessee, and the author of "How Do You Feel?" (2024), and she shares her personal experience with burnout with Equilibria psychologist, Erika Kawamura, PsyD.

They discuss how individuals in certain roles are at risk for burnout, yet feel they have to mask it to "push through" or may not even be aware that they are experiencing burnout. Common risk factors that are discussed in this episode include: demanding and fast-paced workloads with minimal time for rest and recharge, serving roles where they have to constantly put others' needs before their own, being in or working in environments where stoicism, "masking," and "keeping up" with others are common & not doing so may be discouraged or stigmatized , and having personal qualities of being high/over-achievers and putting a lot of internal pressure on one's self.

Weight stigma refers to “discriminatory acts and ideologies targeted towards individuals because of their weight and size”.

Weight stigma is a result of weight bias, also known as anti-fat bias; the negative beliefs associated with obesity. Common stereotypes about larger bodied and fat people are often related to the untrue assumption that they are lazy, lack willpower, have poor hygiene, have compromised moral character, and are less attractive and intelligent. Larger bodied individuals are at an increased risk of experiencing harassment, discrimination, and verbal and physical assault due to their size.

As you can imagine, having a medical provider who may carry these false assumptions or beliefs about you, the patient, based on your size can have negative consequences on the quality of your care. In fact, when physicians focus too much on weight, this not only contributes to weight stigma but can lead to worse health outcomes for all patients regardless of size. Some environmental aspects of medical offices may also reflect weight stigma, including: non-inclusive seating sizes, limited size of gowns, and limited accessibility options for patients to get on the exam table.
